STABLE CONDITIONS IN BRITAIN

CHANCELLOR’S REPORT ON IMPROVED OUTLOOK British Official Wireless RUGBY, March 25. An optimistic view was taken by Mr : Neville Chamberlain (Chancellor of the | Exchequer) in a speech at Birmingham, iHe appealed for confidence in the ! National Government to enable them to complete the task. “Our credit system has been so fully restored that to-day we are almost embarrassed by the amount of money coming Into London from other countries—brought by people who feel this is a safer place than that from which It came. From having slipped back to the position of third exporting country of the world, we have regained the position of the first exporting country.” Over 200 new factories had been established here with foreign capital, the Chancellor reported. The Government had invitations from something like 20 foreign countries to begin negotiations with them for new commercial treaties. Agriculture was being re-organised from top to bottom, and farmers had greater hopes and greater confidence in the future than for many years. Mr Chamberlain went on to say that a great and beneficial change had n the past week come over the situation Europe, as a result of British Initiative. “The interest of this country is now, as it always has been, in the preservation of peace, but it is npt enough for us to say we ourselves do not intend to go to war.
