Mr Ivan A. Mitchell, of Dunedin, is in Timaru. Mr H. F. Nicoll returned to Ashburton yesterday after a trip to England.

The Rev. Father Leonard Bryce, S.M., who was ordained at St Patrick’s Church, Napier, is visiting Fairlie. A Press Association message from Wellington says that Mr Edward James Guiness, Controller of Stores of the Railway Department, is retiring after 40 years’ service with the Department. From 84 applicants the Upper Hutt Borough Council appointed Mr Archie Cecil Renner, as Town Clerk. Until recently he was clerk and treasurer to the Kaikoura County Council. Dr. L. C. McNickle, medical registrar, and deputy-superintendent at Wellington Hospital, has been appointed Superintendent at Invercargill Hospital. Mr T. B. Strong. Director of Education, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning. He was engaged in departmental business at the Canterbury Education Board’s office early in the day, and came south by the mid-day train.

A Sydney message states that Mr T. J. Hartigan has been appointed Chief Commissioner of Railways, in succession to Mr Cleary, who recently resigned. Mr Hartigan was formerly Financial Commissioner of Railways. Mr C. W. E. Moore, a final year B.Agric.Sc. student at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, and late of Otago University and Otago Boys’ High School, has been appointed agricultural master at St. Andrews’ College, Christchurch. There were thirty applicants for the position. Mr A. G. Gillies, 8.A., for seven years assistant science master at St. Andrews’ College, Christchurch, has been promoted to the science mastership in that school; Mr H. Dowling, M.A., to the French mastership, and Mr J. L. Hunter, M.A., to the English mastership. Mr F. R. Bussell, who has been associated with the London office of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, for the past few years, latterly as wool and produce manager, has been appointed inspector of the company in New Zealand, as from January 1 next. Mr Bussell is en route to New Zealand by the Niagara, due in Auckland on Monday. The death occurred on Thursday of Mr J. R. Wilson, recently headmaster of the Lyttelton District High School. Mr Wilson was born at Riverton. He was on the staff of the Somerfield school when that school was first opened. Subsequently he was assistant master at the Timaru Main School, and later transferred to Fairlie as headmaster, where he remained for seven years, prior to being appointed headmaster of the Lyttelton District High School seven years ago. Mr Wilson resigned his position at Lyttelton about five months ago, owing to illhealth.
