WAIMATE

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. With only one day to go to conclude the seasonal rush of business, shopping indications point to a restricted turnover by the Waimate retailers this year. The customary large crowds intent on buying presents to which the town has been used to in the past has this year apparently dwindled to a fraction of old dimensions. Shopkeepers report that customers this year have restricted the value of their purchases and anything in-the nature of a luxury line has been hard to sell. Several of the shopkeepers, however, have expressed the opinion that the business turnover for the festive season will reach, if not actually exceed their expectations, and as buying forward has not been done on a large scale, losses by left over stock will be practically negligible. TENNIS. Playing on the Ikawai Club's courts, Glenavy beat the home representatives in a friendly match by 10 sets 73 games, to 6 sets, 58 games. WILLOWBRIDGE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

The December meeting of the Willowbridge Women’s Institute was held in the Willowbridge Hall, the president (Mrs J. R. Patrick), presiding over a very fair attendance. Deep sympathy was felt for Mrs Faulkner in the loss of her father, all members standing in silence. After routine business had been attended to, the hall was opened for a children’s fancy dress party. Quite a large number came in fancy dress, and all thoroughly enjoyed the games and afternoon tea provided by the Women’s Institute ladies.

The competition for the day was “A Christmas present to cost less than 1/6,” and was won by Mrs Forsyth, with Miss L. Curtis 2. and Mrs Stark 3. For the specimen bloom, Mrs McGowan won both first and second prizes.

The singing of a verse of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
