Mr and Mrs Condon, Waimate, are on a visit to Grey mouth. Mrs Mostyn-Jones, Te Kuiti, is a visitor to Timaru for the golf championship. Miss Olive Mcllraith. Christchurch, is staying with Miss Phyllis Boyle, Hampton House, LeCren's Terrace. Mrs Robertson, Dunedin, is staying at Kelso, Sarah Street, for the golf championship. Mrs James Hay, Christchurch, left on Wednesday to spend a few weeks in Sydney. Mrs F. F. A. Ulrich, Elizabeth Street, will leave to-day to spend the weekend in Christchurch. Mrs R. H. Hunter-Weston, who is on a short visit to Timaru will return to-day to Mt. John, Tekapo. Mr and Mrs Macdonald, Waitawa, who have come to live in Timaru, have taken a house in Evans Street. Mrs Cregoe, Christchurch, who is the guest of Mrs B. H. Howell, Matata, Cave, will leave to-day to stay with Mrs Colin Douglas, Waimate. Mrs Napier, Te Kiteroa, Waimate, and her daughter, Mrs Quaife, England, are on a visit to Mrs A. Chapman, Christchurch. Miss Cathie Harrison, Christchurch, will arrive to-morrow to stay with her sister, Mrs R. T. Turnbull, Beverley Road. Mrs Van Asch, Christchurch, will arrive to-morrow to stay with Mrs E. J. LeCren, Evans Street, for the golf championship.

The engagement is announced of Mary, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs C. L. Austin, Temuka, to Leslie, eldest son of Mr and Mrs T. H. Baker, Christchurch.

On Wednesday last a very enjoyable evening was given by the guests of 66 Wai-iti Road, Mrs A. Saunders being the hostess, Pleasing colour schemes were carried out in the dance and supper rooms. During the evening Miss C. Flamank sang “Love's a Merchant” and “The Fairy Tales of Ireland." Mr Sievwright contributed a musical monologue, and Miss O’Rourke and Mr A. Wilson contributed to the musical programme. After supper the guests took part in a treasure hunt, the clues for which were hidden in various spots in and around Timaru. That the spring flower show is gaining in popularity was evident yesterday when many people were present during the afternoon and evening to view the various exhibits —many of great beauty, which were displayed in the Bay Hall. On entering the hall, masses of beautiful flowers in every cVinrip rmri firrnnupri in a most artis-

tic manner, were to be seen. At the sides of the hall were beautiful spring bulbs, some for exhibition only and some from our own gardens, all of which were very much admired. The decorated tables were many and dainty, pale pinks and mauves being well blended. A much-admired table was decorated with polyanthus and wall flowers in bronze shades. Another was arranged with pink tulips and pale mauve primulas. A gilt basket of flowers filled with glowing Iceland poppies and yellow iris was another beautiful exhibit. An added attraction to the show was the exhibit from, the gardens at “Otahuna,” Tai Tapu, the home of Sir Heaton Rhodes, and some marvellous polyanthus from Oamaru. A very enjoyable dance run by the Committee of the Northdown Te Rangi Scout Troop was held in the Bay Tea Rooms on Thursday night. The hall was decorated with spring flowers. A well attended and pleasant dance was held in the Bay Tea rooms on Wednesday, organised by the South Canterbury Hockey Association ana players, the object being to raise funus for injured players. The various clubs

were well represented and all present spent a most enjoyable evening. Advantage was taken of the occasion to present the trophies won during the year, this being done by Mr C. D. Gibson, and the women's cup, won by Stafford A, was presented to thencaptain, Miss V. Guthrie, while Mr H. Thomas received the men’s eup, won by South End A. Miss H. Tobin was the recipient of a hockey stick, presented by Mr Gibson for the most Improved player of the year. The committee responsible for the excellent arrangements made were under the direction of Mrs A. Morrison and Mr W. Gow. Mr A. Goodman ably discharged the duties of M.C., while popular music was dispensed by a Timaru orchestra.
