SLUMP IN SILVER.

AMERICAN REFUSES TO CONVENE CONFERENCE United Press Association- -By Electrle Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 5. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 4. The New York “Times” states that the hope of the silver interests of America and other countries of the world that the United States would call a conference to stabilise the price of that metal, as recently proposed by the Senate Committee, ended with the intimation that President Hoover did not approve of the step. It is felt that the United States has so little interest in the silver problem, aside from its bearing on world trade (the extent of which is regarded as debatable), that this country could not afford to accept the responsibility of calling an international conference. It contends that international complications for the United States might be born of such a conference, particularly with Britain as the result of the Indian silver situation.
