Not only have some of the stock firms in country districts in North Canterbury reduced the number of agents and other employees, but motorcars used by their men are being, or have been, called in. There are instances where one car only is used by the agents of several firms on trips to stock sales. At the South Island tennis championships, which commenced in Dunedin on Saturday, W. G. Robertson, cf Timaru, secured a win in each of the first three rounds. In his first game he defeated Williamson 6-0, 6-2; in his second he beat J. C. Robertson 6-0. 6-2; and in his third game he beat E. McDougall 6-1, 6-4. Playing with W. Sumpter in the doubles, Robertson, in the first game beat Arnold and McLeod, -1, 6-3. In the ladies’ singles, Miss D. Hart, of Timaru, defeated Miss Cox 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 and she also defeated Miss Romans 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Mrs W. A. Scott also won her first singles match, defeating Mrs Peppier 6-3. 6-3. In the doubles, both Timaru representatives won their matches, Mrs Scott ad vane- • tag to the fourth round.
