GERALDINE.

GIRL SERIOUSLY HURT. RUN DOWN BY MOTOR CAR. Serious injury was suffered by Eva G-oodeve. aged sixteen years, a daughter of Mrs Goodeve, Talbot Street, Geraldine, when she was run down by a motor-car on the main highway between Cooper’s Creek Bridge and Orari Bridge on Saturday night about ' 6.30. The girl was cycling in the direction 1 of Geraldine, and the car, which waij i driven by Mr David Bell, of Carew, ! was travelling north. At the time of the accident visibility was not good | owing to approaching darkness. Dr Mail and Constable Callanan were called to the scene of the accident. and the injured girl was removed to Geraldine by ’bus. Inquiries made yesterday elicited the information that the girl was still in an unconscious condition. VALEDICTORY SOCIAL. Members of the Geraldine Methodist Church entertained the Rev. J. Southern and Mrs Southern at a farewell social in the Sunday School last week. There was a very good attendance of residents. Songs were given by Miss R. Simpson and Messrs E. White and B. Logan; a dialogue by the Misses Comber; a flute solo by Mr E. Undrill, and humorous readings by Messrs R. Neutze and A. F. Barrell. The good wishes and congratulations of the people were expressed in short speeches by Mrs Wallach and Messrs F. Wallach, G. Loach. R. J. McKeown and A. F. Barrell. The senior Circuit Steward (Mr A. F. Barrell) asked the guests to accept a travelling rug and a suit-case as an expression of good-will and good wishes for a season of successful and happy work in Springston Circut. After Mr and Mrs Southern had suitably replied, a happy evening was brought to a close by the dispensing of supper, provided by the ladies. WORK AT SCHOOL GROUNDS. Following on the decision of a recent public meeting in Geraldine, called to consider improvements at the school grounds, a number of men have been employed under the No. 5 Scheme to carry out drainage, the topping of trees and the removal of a shelter shed to a warmer and more useful position. When a “Timaxu Herald” representative visited the grounds on Saturday, the headmaster (Mr A. F. Barrell) showed him the work that has already been carried out. Two long drains have been made in the northern end of the playground, one across the area, and the other at right angles, and these are being filled with boulders. It is hoped that this will prove an effective drainage scheme, and that a dry playing field will thus be provided in all weathers. Other work in the primary grounds includes the topping of trees, and when this work is finished, it will allow the playground more sunshine. At the secondary grounds the contractor has nearly completed the Job of removing the stumps, and other improvements will be carried out with labour under the No. 5 Scheme. A meeting of the School Committee will be held on Tuesday, when the subject of playground improvements will probably be further discussed. PERSONAL ITEMS.
