SENSATION AT RIVERTON. three horses believed doped. By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL, April 5. A sensation was caused in racing circles yesterday morning when it was learned that three horses —Rin Tin Tin, Caterpillar and Francolin—who were engaged at the Riverton meeting the same day, were in a bad way as a result of what was believed to be the effects of doping. The three horses were found early yesterday morning in their boxes, and appeared to be suffering great pain. Francolin and Caterpillar were right down to it and were scouring badly, but Rin Tin Tin did not seem to be so greatly affected. The services of a veterinary surgeon were summoned, but it is understood that the cause of the trouble had not been diagnosed last night. During the day the three horses who, of course, could take no part in the day’s racing, showed signs of improvement, but it is unlikely that any of them will be able to compete on the . remaining two days ef the meeting.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. THE FINAL GALLOPS. The conditions were unpleasant for early training operations at Riccarton on Saturday. A ground fog descended on the course just before proceedings opened, and it hung in patches, obscuring the view in shifting patches, and making the timing of gallops difficult. The sun shone out later for the benefit of after-breakfast workers. Practically all the fast work was done on the outside of the course proper, but it was a trifle dead, from the effects of the rain the previous day. Muff galloped six furlongs in lmin. 18sec, on the number six grass track. This was the only fast work other than that done on the course. Praise, Jaloux, and Azalia went out together, ( but they did only useful work. Solvent sprinted about half a mile up the back. Taragona covered a mile in lmin. 48 2Spoon ran nine furlongs in lmin. 58 3-ssec. She covered the first five in lmin. 4sec, and after being eased up in the straight, she finished on strongly again over the final furlong. Aberfeldy occupied lmin. 52sec. for a mile, after doing the first half in 54 3-ssec. Meprisant covered a mile in lmin. 56 2-ssec, going at an even pace throughout. Autopay and the two-year-old Idolise sprinted half a mile up the back in 52sec, after showing a lot of speed for the first three furlongs. Historic gave Shatter a start of four lengths over seven furlongs, the pair being together at the end. Historic’s time was lmin. 31 2-ssec, a smart gallop. Full Feather and Semper Paratus finished on terms, well clear of Ball Dress, after running a mile in lmin. 46 2-ssec. Ball Dress went badly, but the other pair galloped well, the performance of Semper Paratus being very attractive. Synonym (I. Tilson) and Huntly (D. Stock) jumped three hurdles smartly. Synonym went on alone over another, but did not shape well without his mate. Owlsflight and Decisive sprinted up the back. Parysia covered a mile in lmin. 49 3Limerick and Charmeuse were companions over seven furlongs. They kept together for two furlongs, when Limerick suddenly dropped back several lengths, but he overhauled his mate again before the wanning post was reached. Charmeuse ran the first three furlongs in 39sec, and the pair completed their task in lmin. 32 2-ssec, Charmeuse doing the last half-mile in 53 2-ssec, and Limerick a little faster. Limerick had an advantage in weight, and Charmeuse’s effort was very satisfactory, especially as she does best on a firm track.

Great Star reeled off five furlongs in lmin 3 3-ssec, a very attractive gallop. Rapina was a length in front of Sharp Thorn at the end of seven furlongs, the first three being done in 39 3-ssec, and the full journey taking lmin. 35sec.
