A.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. AMMON BA’S PRODUCE STAKES. CHIDE DISAPPOINTING. United Press Association —By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 5, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 5. The A.J.C. Autumn meeting opened at Randwlck on Saturday in fine, cool weather, before an attendance of 41,000. The track was in excellent condition. The Dimmer, a prominent Cup fancy, enhanced his prospects in that event by annexing in decided fashion the Autumn Stakes. Chide, from whom great deeds were expected, was unable to gain a place. New Zealand's champion, Ammon Ra, won the richly endowed Sires’ Produce Stakes in effortless fashion. The Sires’ Produce Stakes comprised a sweepstake of £2O each, with £SOOO added; second horse £IOOO and third £SOO from the prize; also £250 to the nominator of the sire of the winner. Chide, Meadowdale and Soulton are unlikely starters in the Sydney Cup tomorrow. The Doncaster Handicap was productive of a brilliant finishing effort on the part of the winner, Sir Chrystopher, who was badly placed in the early stages of the race. He was fifth last on entering the straight, but under vigorous riding by the jockey, Munro, he unwound a dashing run which carried him to victory by half a length. Results:— FIRST HURDLES. Kims, 9.0 (Lillyamon) 1 Satrap, 9.5 (Pearce) 2 Doctor Grace, 9.0 (Frost) .... 3 Thirteen started. Perides was the early pacemaker from Kelene, Dalland and Doctor Grace. Passing the stand the first time, Kims ran to the front and -Was thereafter in command. Satrap issued a challenge nearing the final obstacle, but Kirns maintained his advantage with ease and won by a neck. Time—3min 40»sec. AUTUMN STAKES. The Dimmer, 9.0 (Duncan) .... 1 Donald, 9.0 (Davidson) 2 John Buchan, 9.0 (Munro) .... 3 Eight started. From an even start, Soulton smartly ran to the front followed by Royal Smile, Chide, First Acre and John Buchan, with Glare last. Passing the stand Soulton led by a length from Chide, First Acre, Donald and The Dimmer. When their heads were turned for home, from a bunched field. Soulton, Chide and Donald were prominent. At the distance John Buchan, Donald and The Dimmer were on even terms, but in a desperate finish The Dimmer gained the verdict by a head. Time—2min 34asec. SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES. Ammon Ra, 8.10 (McCarten) .. 1 Johnnie Jason, 8.10 (Cracknell) 2 Gallantic, 8.10 (Duncan) .... 3 Eighteen started. Gallantic was smartest to move away from Movie Star. Rory O’Moore, Ammon Ra, and Johnnie Jason. Entering the straight, Rory O'Moore held a slight advantage over Ammon Ra, Johnnie Jason, Gallantic and Movie Star. Taking charge

at the distance Ammon Rra bounded away from the field, reaching the judge with two lengths to spare. Time—lmin 251 sec. DONCASTER HANDICAP. Sir Christopher, 8.5 (Munro) .. 1 Mollison, 9.7 (Cook) 2* Casque d'Or, 8.6 (Pratt) 3 Sixteen started. Casque d’Or was smartest out of the machine from Mollison, Parkwood, Tichino and Cathmar. Passing the half mile, Mollison showed the way to Tichino, Waugoola and Casque d’Or, with Waterline and Sir Chrystopher at the rear of the field. Mollison was first into the straight, and at the distance appeared to have the race in hand, but Sir Chrystopher, finishing brilliantly, threaded through the field and got up in time to gain a victory by half a length. Time—lmin 37sec. ST. LEGER STAKES. Veilmond, 8.10 (McCarten) .. 1 Carry On, 8.8 (Cook) 2 Balloon King, 8.10 (Pike) .... 3 Tregilla and Salvador were the other starters. Balloon King took up the running from Carry On, Veilmond, Tregilla and Salvador. They were running in that order at the top of the straight, where Carry On joined Balloon King, closely pressed by Veilmond, and followed by Tregilla and Salvador. At the distance, Balloon King, Carry On and Veilmond were on even terms, but Veilmond, finishing strongly, drew away to win by three lengths. Time—3min 2sec. VAUCLUSE HANDICAP. (First Division). Trevallion, 8.10 (Pike) ...... 1 Commandment, 8,0 (Wilson) .. 2 Killarney, 11.2 (McCarten) .... 3 Seventeen started. When the field settled down Vorkman had charge and led into the straight ahead of Che- • mosh, Auda, Trevallion, Teppo, Lucre, and Killarney. From a sharp tussle passing the St Leger, Trevallion emerged and took command, and going on, won nicely by three lengths. Time—lmin 251 sec. (Second Division.) Panola, 10.6 (Pike) 1 Coolmint, 8.3 (Coutts) 2 Celtic, 9.5 (McLachlan) 3 Sixteen started. The Abbott took the role of pacemaker from Mintage, Panola and Ranworth, and showed the way home. He appeared a likely winner from Panola, Coolmint and Celtic, but Panola put in a well-timed run and gained the verdict by four lengths. Time—lmin 251 sec. DUNCAN WILL NOT RIDE IN CUP. PRAISE FOR AMMON RA. United Press Association—By Bleotrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received April 5, 5.5 p.m.) YDNEY, April 5. Owing to the suspension of W. Duncan, Victorian champion lightweight jockey, for one month for interference In the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick yesterday, a new rider will be required for The Dimmer in the Sydney Cup on Monday. Bartle will probably receive the mount as his mount, Tregilla, is not likely to start in the Cup. A sporting writer “Cardigan," in the “Sydney Guardian," says that Ammon Ra, winner of the Sires’ Produce Stakes, proved himself quite as good as his New Zealand admirers claimed, finishing very determinedly. There is little doubt that he will make a name for himself as a three-year-old. “Indeed. Ammon Ra appears equal to any New Zealand two-year-old seen in Australia for many years.” WAIRARAPA RACES TO-DAY. By Telegraph—Press Association MA3TERTON. April 5. The Wairarapa Racing Club’s autumn meeting, the opening day of which was postponed on Saturday, is to be held to-morrow and on Tuesday.

Nightmarch is the popular tip for the Great Easter, but no particular surprise will be expressed if his only start at Riccarton is in the Challenge Stakes. The champion was not on the tracks at Riccarton on Saturday morning, his work consisting of light exercise in the centre of the course. The crack Victorian jockey, W. Duncan, who was engaged to ride The Dimmer in the Sydney Cup, was (according to a wireless broadcast from Sydney) suspended on Saturday for a month. Chide's failure in a weak field in the Autumn Stakes at Randwick seems to dispose of his prospects in the Sydney Cup, in which he is to be ridden by J Pike. Veilmond and Carry On, who finished first and second in the A.J.c. St. Leger, are both trained by George Price. Veilmond was bred in New Zealand, being purchased by Price for a patron at the Trentham sales. Both Veilmond Carry On are engaged in to-day's Sydney Oup.

The former structure was demolished by fire in August, 1928. The insurances on the building were £1125. At a meeting of the Westland Racing Club stewards this morning it was decided, owing to the total destruction of the appointments, that it was impossible to held the race meeting on Wednesday. On the suggestion of Mr T. Eldon Coates, chairman of the District Racing Committee, it was resolved to approach the Canterbury Jockey Club with a view to holding a substitute meeting at Riccarton on a date suitable to the Canterbury Club. The Westland Club is a heavy loser by the first, which is the second severe loss within three years. Incendiarism is again suspected as the cause of the fire. The local Club is receiving many messages of sympathy in its loss. TROTTING. METROPOLITAN CLUB'S MEETING. BIG RACE TO FREE ADVICE. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. The Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter fixture was opened in fine weather, but the track was in bad order as a result of heavy rain overnight. The outer half was not so much affected, but the water had drained on to the inside portion, and converted it into a bog. Motor-cars were sent round it in the morning to squeeze the moisture out, and after the sun had been allowed to work for a time the harrows were brought into operation. This worked some improvement, but the portion nearest the rails was very heavy all day, and only one race was won by a horse near the rails. In every other case the winner travelled in the centre or further out, and the extra ground covered was partly responsible for the slow times. A Win to Wincester. The ex-Waimate trotter Standby was made a pronounced favourite for the Preliminary Handicap, carrying almost twice as much money as Stanley T., who was in much better demand than any of the others. Standby broke at the start, and when he settled down he was interfered with by Bright Light, another slow beginner. Standby then broke a second time and settled his chance. St. Petrox (galloping) and Audobell led off, but turning into the back the leaders were All Peters, Audobell and Nelson Ata together. Nelson Ata left his feet, and All Peters led down the back from Audobell, Nelson Ata, Nelson Boy and Repute. At the stand, All Peters was carrying on from Nelson Ata, Nelson Boy, Repute, Mount Royal and Audobell. Half a mile from home All Pieters was three lengths clear of Nelson Ata, who had an advantage of five lengths from Repute and Nelson Boy. At the far turn Stanley T. ran into fourth place behind All Peters, Nelson Ata and Repute, and this was the order at the home turn. All Peters wtas not caught, and won by a length from Stanley T., who finished fast on the extreme outside. Repute was a dtogien lengths away, four lengths ahead of Eileen Wood. Nelson Ata was second a furlong from home, but broke up badly in a wet patch. Stanley T. would have , made things more interes&hff bad he begun more smartly.

The Mile Saddle. Kinney Dillon, Avonwood and Ko- i tuku Jack retired from the mile saddle, leaving 14 to face the barriers. Cranleigh 1380 finished up about 50 units in better request than the Harvest ChildRoyal Comrade couplet, Mercury being third choice. John Noble did not leave to time, and Nelson de Oro and Royal Comrade were slow to move. Mercury went off in front, but did not strike a gait. Great Triumph and Kate Logan led into the straight, but when the stand was reached, Kate Logan and Dilnon were just ahead of Royal Comrade, with Cranleigh and Harvest Child close up. Turning into the back Dilnon was two lengths ahead of Kate Logan, who was three lengths in advance of Royal Comrade. Cranleigh and Harvest Child were four lengths further back. Dilnon ran round the top bend three lengths ahead of Royal Comrade, who had drawn away from Kate Logan, Cranleigh and Harvest Child. Dilnon was never challenged, and won by six lengths or more from Cranleigh, who was three lengths in front of Nelson de Oro. Royal Comrade tired badly in the bog near the rails, but it looked as if his rider might have saved third money, and not allowed Nelson de Oro to beat him by a length. A “Divided” Race. That the class for the Easter Handicap was not as good as usual was indicated by the fact that eleven-year-old Logan Chief was on the back mark. Regal Voyage was installed a 130tokens better favourite than the Dundas Boy-Lindbergh combination, with the young Wellington pacer Glenrossie ranking as third selection. Regal Voyage broke at the start and wrecked her chance, and Dundas Boy and The Abbey both went away slowly. At the end of two furlongs Glenrossie and Great Logan were in charge from Vesuvius and Pluto. Glenrossie and Great Logan, however, stuck to the rails, where the going was sticky, and when the stand was reached, Vesuvius, Free Advice and Pluto, on firmer footing wider out, had headed them. Thereafter the race was run almost in two sections, on the two halves of the track. Vesuvius paced to the mile post in 2.22, followed by Free Advice, Pluto and The Abbey, all wide out; with Glenrossie and Great Logan next, leading the division on the rails. Commencing the final lap the order was Vesuvius, Free Advice, Pluto, Glenrossie, Great Logan, The Abbey. At this stage both Dundas Boy and Lindbergh, who could not handle the soft going, were being pulled up. Harold Thorpe moved up after leaving the straight, and at the back the leaders were Vesuvius, Free Advice, Harold Thorpe, Pluto. Vesuvius was first into the straight, but a furlong from home he was challenged by Free Advice, who soon took his measure and came on to win by a couple of lengths. Harold Thorpe was four lengths away, six lengths clear of Pluto, with Glenrossie some distance further away. The state of the track was indicated by the fact that the winner took 4.39 1-5 off 4.27. Easy For Satin King. The Southland champion Satin King, .now in . E. Hooper’s stable, was the prime fancy for the Express Handicap, 360 chances above Colonial Boy, who was nearly 500 above Hostess. Hostess and Proud Dillon broke early in the race and lost a lot of ground. Satin King made play from Erin’s Lynn and Colonial Boy. Erin’s Lynn tangled at the end of a furlong, and at the stand Satin King, out on the firmer going, was jogging along three lengths ahead of Colonial Boy, then came Jolly Pet, Sunny Bob, Hostess (who had made up ground rapidly), Arikitoa and Epigram. Satin King led past the mile in 2.22, from Colonial Boy, Sunny Bob, Jolly Pet and Hostess. Beginning the final circuit the order was Satin King, Hostess, Sunny Bob, Colonial Boy and Jolly Pet, ‘ the bunch being a few lengths clear of Grandlight and Avenger. Satin King, Hostess and Sunny Bob led down the back, and round the top, where Avenger had forged into fourth place. Hostess challenged Satin King at the top of the straight, but could make no impression on him, and after a tap with the whip the favourite drew away to win by four lengths. Hostess was the same distance ahead of Sunny Bob, who beat Avenger by five lengths. Grandlight was fifth. Hostess paced a fine race after losing about four seconds at the start, and it was a pity that she did not begin well and give an indication of how good Satin King really is. The winner equalled the time of Free Advice in the big race, and justified the claim that he is the most promising pacer seen in Southland for some years. An Imported Winner. Stanley T.’s effort in the opening event caused him to be backed down to even money in the Autumn Handicap, for which thirteen trotters paraded. Olive Nelson, who was second choice carried little more than a third as much money as the English gelding. New Metford, Home Voyage and Bonny Spec all began slowly. Lady Fan took up the running from Eileen Wood, and at the end of half a mile the leaders were Lady Fan, Eileen Wood. Home Voyage, Master Audo, Stanley T. Olive Nelson was going well in the second bunch at the back when she left her feet. At the mile the front division comprised Lady Fan. Stanley T. Eileen Wood and Home Voyage, but Eileen Wood broke on the comer and lost ground. Stanley T. trotted to the front in the straight, and entered the concluding circuit followed by Home Voyage, Master Audo, Lady Fan (on a break) and Fifa. Stanley T. led along the back from Home Voyage and Master Audo, who were well clear of Olive Nelson, Eileen Wood and Native Star. At the top Stanley T. was holding command from Home Voyage, Master Audo and Olive Nelson, and these positions were not disturbed to the end, Stanley T. winning apparently with something in reserve by two lengths from Home Voyage. Master Audo broke just before reaching the post and was three lengths behind the second horse. Olive Nelson was fourth and Eileen Wood next. Stanley T.’s time compared very favourably with that registered by the pacers. He is not a stylish trotter, and has a disturbing habit of switching his tail, but there Is no doubt that he is much above the average. Half-Brother to Acron. The eighteen starters in the Belfast Handicap were crowded into a limit of 12 yards, and when Red Shadow drew No. 1 in the front line he was backed down to a very short price, 700 units above Milo Minto. The favourite was restive at the start, and was chopped back to the rear. Omaha and Steel All, at the outset, also lost any chance they had. Mercury and Milo Minto led off from Lady Cello, Macaranda and Cranleigh, and at the end of half a mile the leaders were Milo Minto and Mercury, with Pageant, Cranleigh, Lady Cello and Harvest Child in a row just behind them. Wilma Dillon broke and dropped out as they left the straight. Milo Minto and Mercury led down the back from Sir Author, Harvest Child and Cranleigh, but Milo Minto appeared to falter slightly at the far turn. Two furlongs from home Mercury was in charge from Sir Author and Milo ; Minto, then came Eugene de Oro and Aleron. Sir Author wore Mercury down after reaching the straight, and came on to win by three lengths from Milo Minto, who defeated Mercury by a length. Neeoro put in a fast drive and missed third money by only a head. Nelson de Oro and Aleron were next, the heavy going near the rails settling Eugene de Oro, who was third at one stage in the straight. The winner is a half-brother to Acron, but is more

solid than the flying miler was. Milo Minto paced another consistent race, and the spell he had before he won at Ashburton appears to have benefited him very greatly. A Classy Three-Year-Old. There were no scratchings for the Wilkin Handicap, the slow-class twomile race. Backers sized the chances up as Real Girl 1574, Kelp 1009, St. George 988, Rawhitiroa 846. Rawhitiroa was slow off the mark, and St. George broke up completely. Kreisler, Real Girl and Our George began well from the front, and at the stand Kreisler, Mac Dillon and Our Girl were-just ahead of Teremoa, Our George and Sonoma. Golden Ore had cracked up and dropped out. When the mile post was reached Kreisler, Teremoa, ‘Real Girl and Our George were disputing the lead, showing a good gap from Rey Logan and Mac Dillon. Teremoa and Kreisler were just ahead of Our George and Real Girl with a lap to go, Kelp and Rey Logan being handy, and Rawhitiroa not far away. Teremoa, ‘Our George, Real Girl and Kelp piloted the field along the back, where Rawhitiroa put in a brilliant run which landed him in third place to Teremoa and Our George at the tanks. Our George was three lengths clear of Rawhitiroa two furlongs from home and led into the straight from Rawhitiroa. Kelp and Real Girl. In the concluding stages Rawhitiroa came away and won by three or four lengths from Our George, who was tiring badly. Real Girl was a length away, third, a head in front of Sonoma, who finished fast and just headed Kelp. Rawhitiroa was unlucky at the start, and had to register a fine performance to win. He must rank very high among the season’s three-year-olds, very little behind Red Shadow and Arethusa. Brilliant Travis Axworthy. The day’s proceedings wound up with the Flying Handicap, a 2.44 mile and a quarter event which drew a better class field than the big race of the day. Harold Logan opened up favourite, and the final figures were Harold Logan 2207, Travis Axworthy 2185, and Roi l’Or 1406. Vendome failed to go away to time, and Bonny Logan was slow in gathering speed. Talaro shot away very quickly, and at the stand was in charge from The Abbey, with Travis Axworthy, Terence Dillon and Dundas Boy in a row just behind, laro led The Abbey and Travis Axworthy into the back straight, and at the top the order was Talaro, The Abbey, Dundas Boy, Travis Axworthy, King Pointer, Harold Logan. Travis Axworthy swished past the at the turn, and ran in an easy winner by three lengths from Dundas Boy, who lasted long enough to stall off Harold Logan by a neck. King Pointer was fourth and Roi l’Or next. Travis Axworthy smothered the field for speed over the last furlong. Harold Logan, who had been suffering lately from foot trouble, was set too big a task over-the last half of the trip. Roi I’Or was nearly last three furlongs from home, but was going strongly at the end.
