NEWS AND NOTES.

Mrs J. Ord advertises desirable 10roomed residence for sale or to let. Particulars page 23. Inspection invited.. A new petrol economiser in the; form, of a carburettor attachment has j been devise d by two Christchurch j engineers. The attachment is ver" simple, and is different from other such contrivances in that there is no provision for extra air. Exhaustive tests have been carried out, and expectations have been exceeded. An increase of from four to seven miles a gallon has been gained under all sorts of adverse conditions. The attachment allows of a very minute jet adjustment. Skating enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the open air skating rink opp. Ballantynes, will be reopened in a few days.... There* are many old buildings in and about Christchurch, some dating back to the early days of the settlement, but unless the inscription on the Papanui Post Office is incorrect, that handsome j and apparently modern structure boasts j greater antiquity than any other work of man in the Dominion. The inscription on the building reads: “G.R. Papanui Post Office and Telegraph Office. A.D. 21.” Apparently the figures ‘‘l9” have disappeared from before ‘‘2l.” and some Papanui residents think that it is about time they were restored., and that the inscription ceased to be misleading. A public meeting, under the aupsices of the Alliance of Labour, will be held in the Scottish Hall on Monday night, when the wag&s question will be discussed. On Wednesday next at 1.30 Morton and Co., will sell on account of Mr. Fullalove, 62 Bank Street, the whole of his superior furniture and effects. Everything for absolute sale Morton and Co., acting on instructions from Mr Geo. Langrish. will sell bv auction, at No. 13 Rhodes Street, the whole of his contracting plant as advertised. The Committee of the unemployed in Timaru gave a very enjoyable dance in the Wentworth Hall on Wednesday evening, the hall being fairly well packed, and everyone seemed to enjoythemselves. These should prove a popular function in the future. Mrs Woodwards orchestra provided the music, everyone expressing appreciation. Mr F. Earl carried out the duties of M.C. Mr Runciman gave the use of a piano. A ladies committee attended to supper arrangements appreciation being expressed by several present. It is the intention of the committee to run dances through the winter months in aid of funds for the relief of needy families in Timaru. Left-off clothing, would be greatly appreciated if left with Mr Runciman at the Wentworth Mart.

Women's wit seems to have found the solution of a long-standing problem. The ‘‘Glasgow Herald” tells of a young! farm girl who conducted two pigs to I a new abode:—‘‘But she was not behind them, in the customary way, ! shooing them on and prodding them with a stick. She was in front, with one hand dropping grains of corn at intervals behind her; and the other hand held a crumpled novelette, which was receiving by far the greater part of her attention. Her rate of progress, we are told, “showed that she had discovered the right end of a porker for her present purpose.” ANOTHER PROBLEM POR MOTHERS. One of the greatest problems to-day for mothers is the increasing prevalence of worms in children. Invariably the symptoms of their presence are bad breath, grinding of the teeth, itching nose, stomach pains, and disordered bowels. Worms will do a great deal of mischief to a child’s constitution if not checked. The easiest and most efficient remedy to give children is Ayres’ Chocolate Worm Tablets. Children like taking these chocolate tablets as much as they like eating sweets. Buy chocolate worm tablets (price 2/-) at E. C. Ayres’ Ltd., chemists, Stafford Street South, Timaru The wiseacre who said that there’s nothing new under the sun, can be excused for his mistake, for he had never seen Cameron’s. This progressive outfitters for men’s and boys’ clothing is fairly overflowing with new things in the matter of clothing, mercery, underwear for autumn and winter. A visit to this bright, brisk store will prove a revelation of quality, variety and low prices. If it’s new, Cameron’s has it

CHRONIC CONSTIPATION. Sir Arbuthnot Lane, the famous British physician, says that people with a pure blood stream will live much longer than those whose blood is poisoned by the toxins caused by constipation. Boils, pimples, Indigestion, gastric ulcers, appendicitis, are often due to chronic constipation. The use \ of harsh purgatives gives only a temporary relief; they are habit-forming and dangerous. If you are constipated take Laxigen. This is a natural, gentle laxative that will restore the bowels to their natural wave-like movement. Laxigen is obtainable at 2/6 bottle from E, C. Ayres, Ltd., chemists, Stafford Street South, Timaru
