WATER TOO COLD.

COOK STRAIT SWIM ABANDONED. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 29. Although keen to make the attempt, Mias Mercedes Gleitze decided this evening that she would not set out this season on the proposed Cook Strait swim. Miss Gleitze came to this decision after final consultation with Mr John Tait, of Island Bay. It is likely now that she will return at the beginning of 1933, when the season may be more favourable to the venture. Mr Tait has been studying conditions of Cook Strait as far as they are likely to affect the swim, and he advised Miss Gleitze to abandon it at present. The water temperature today was 58 degrees—too cold for a prolonged spell in the water, and it is unlikely that temperatures in the near future will be any warmer. Added to this, there has been a heavy swell in the Strait during the last few days. Miss Gleitze was very anxious to make the attempt to-morrow if she possibly could, but realised after .speaking to Mr sgalt, that it would be ’a foolish enterprise.
