United Press Association —By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 20, 7.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 20. Wheat 2/31. Flour, £6/17/- to £7. Bran £4. Pollard £4/15/-. Oats, 1/11 and 2/-. Barley, English 2/2 and 2/4. Maize, 3/9 and 3/10. GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS. BUSINESS QUIET. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, March 20. Business in the grain and produce markets is very quiet. The market for milling wheat Is steady, but not a great deal of business is doing. Owing to the dry season in North Canterbury, some of the grain offering is the worst seen for years. Hunters is quoted at 5/4 to 5/5 on trucks, and Tuscan at 5/3. Fowl wheat, for prompt delivery, .is worth 4/91 spread delivery 5/2. There is better inquiry for oats, but not many lines are offering. Quotations are.—Algerians 1/10 to 1/11, A grade Gartons 2/1, B do 1/11. Partridge peas are offering on a basis of 4/- to 4/3 on trucks. Little business is passing in potatoes; f.u.q. are quoted at 80/- to 82/0 f.o.b. s.i. for April-May-June delivery, and 90/6 to 82/6 for July-August-Septem-ber delivery. No business is passing in chaff, the nominal quotations being £3. SOUTHLAND RAM FAIR. KEEN DEMAND FOR SOUTHDOWNS By Telegraph—Pres* Association INVERCARGILL, March 20. The brightest feature of the first day of the anual Southland ram and ewe. fair was the comparatively good values ruling for flock Southdown rams, of which an increased number was entered and for which there was the keenest competition. Though the entry of Southdowns was a large one it was apparent that values were firm. Competition was keen, and the position appeared to improve as the sale progressed. At present market values sale in all sections must be accounted very satisfactory, and particularly in the case of breeds suitable for the production of fat lambs. Prices were definitely encouraging. As in the north, wool appeared to be a secondary consideration. Following was the range of is (guineas);— Stud Rama. Southdown, 8i to 36. Border Leicester, 8 to 131. Romney Marsh, 7 to 40. Stud Ewes Southdown, 21 to 4. Flock Rams. English Leicester 2 to 43. Southdown (lambs), 31 to 33. Southdown, 41 to 141. DUNEDIN WEEK-END REPORT. LITTLE BUSINESS PASSING. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, March 20. The only wheat that has been coming to hand from this provinoe has been from Central Otago. Little business Is passing, as millers are not operating further in Canterbury wheat until they find out how their forward purchases from this district turn out. The fowl wheat market is quiet, with merchants working on small stocks only all the time. The price 1s nominally 5/- per bushel, ex store, sacks extra. Odd orders for oats are being received from the North Island, and A and B. grade Gartons, but this market is bare of supplies until deliveries of the new crop come to hand. The value of A. grade Gartons for shipping stands at 2/8, f.0.b., s.i., and for B.’s at 2/6, f.0.b., s.i. These prices are equivalent to 2/- and 1/10 on trucks at country sidings, sacks extra. Barely sufficient chaff is coming to hand from this district, but there is plenty offering from Canterbury at a price that does not show a very great return to the grower. Good quality chaff is worth £4/10/- per ton, ex truck Dunedin, sacks extra. Dry weather has resulted in heavier supplies of potatoes coming forward to the local auction marts, with a consequent easing in values. Best tubers ere to day worth £4 per ton. Generally spjaking the Otago and Southland ryegrass crop of seeds is proving disappointing as regards quality. The dogstail crop is also reported to be a failure in Southland, and the quality is much below the usual standard of seed harvested in the south. There has been a firming in values in dogstail, but ryegrass of average quality that has been offered so far has been largely neglected by merchants. CHRISTCHURCH RAM FAIR. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, March 20. The annual ram fair of stud stock was held to-day, the entry totalling 283 head. Auckland, Wairarapa, Manawatu, Southland and South Canterbury breeders were represented, besides ail the best-known North Canterbury breeders. Except for Southdowns and English Leicesters, it was a dull sale, with passings frequent. Many sheep were bought to go to the North Island. The range of prices was as follows.— Corriedale—7gns to 62Jgns. Southdowns—sgns to 42gns. English Leicester—7Jgns to 43gns. Lincoln—7gns to 22 gns. Border Leicester—sgns to 20gns.
