HUNT CLUB.

PROVISION OP FINANCE. A special meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt Club was held yesterday for the purpose of amending the rules so as to permit the Club to raise a mortgage of £IOOO on the Kennels property. There were present—The Master (Mr C. L. Orbell), Miss Betty Harper, and Messrs M. C. Harper, F. F. Neale, R. Bassett, R. Murphy, W. J. Bassett, A. G. Macdonald. R. Morris, H. 11. EJworthy, and H. Elworthy. The Master said it had been decided at a previous meeting that a mortgage should be raised on the Kennels and. through the agency of Mr Herbert Elworthy, the Hunt had obtained a sum of £IOOO at 6 per cent. The interest was guaranteed by individual members of the committee, and the principal by Mr H. Elworthy and the speaker. This, however, wou’d mean amending the rujes of the Club and the meeting thaferSHternoon had been called for this purpose. The Master formally moved the following motion:— “That the rules be altered by the addition of the following rules, namely: (11a) The committee shall have the power at any time, or times, at its discretion, to borrow in the corporate name of the Society for any purpose of the Society any sum, or sums, of money upon such terms as it thinks fit, and may also borrow money on bank overdraft and may secure the repayment of any amount borrowed by mortgage of all or any part of the real or personal property of the Society on such terms as it thinks lit. (27a) Every document to which the seal is affixed shall be signed by at least two members of the committee and the secretary.” The motion was seconded by Mr W. J. Bassett and was carried without uiscussion. * Meeting of Committee. A meeting oi the committee was then held, the same members being present with the exception of Mr W. J. Bassett. Reference was made by the Master to the valuable services rendered by Mr W. J. Bassett, for many years a member of the committee. The secretary (Mr H. j.*. Fraser) was instructed to write to Mr Bassett expressing the club’s appreciation of his services to Hunting. After a discussion, the Master, Messrs H. Elworthy, A. G. Macdonald, A. S. Elworthy, and R. Murphy were appointed a committee to go into the question of holding a race meeting and Point-to-Point, and to draw up a suitable programme, a report to be submitted to next meeting of the committee. Mr R. Morris was re-appointed field secretary to the Hunt. At its ' last meeting the com- ; mittee passed a motion protesting against the New Zealand Racing Conference in seeking particulars regarding the number of days the Club had raced since 1913-14, together with other information. At a meeting of the Committee yesterday a letter was read from the secretary of the Racing Conference expressing regret at the attitude adopted by the Committee. The letter was as follows: “My attention has been called to a newspaper report of a meeting of your committee relating to the figures which the secretary of the Club was requested to supply to this office. The figures asked for were required for the purpose of placing the nnancial position of clubs before the Government with a view to obtaining a reduction in the taxation imposed upon racing generally. The figures sought were not obtainable from records kept at this office, as alleged, nor has the Racing Conference a big clerical staff as stated at the meeting. It •is unfortunate that the committee of the club should have allowed its misapprehension to have, been published, and I hope that steps will be taken to correct same.” The Master (Mr C. L. Orbell) said that a great many clubs had been complaining about the continual requests for statistical information, but. in this case apparently the information was requested so that it could be forwarded to the Government. The letter was received, no action being taken.
