WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The second annual meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute took place on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Macdonald, the president, presiding over an attendance of over 50 members. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Allison in her bereavement. Correspondence was read from Miss N. Wilson, W.aipukurau Women’s Institute. expressing thanks for a donation which had been forwarded to help those who had lost in the earthquake. A. letter received from Miss Dinwiddle, secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Federation, thanking the Institute for expressions of sympathy, gave a short account of some of the privations suffered by Institute members. The monthly letter from Trumpington Institute, Cambridge, England, received by Mrs Macdonald, was read. The annual report, read by the president, showed that the second year of the Institute had been one of steady progress. Meetings had been held monthly with the exception of January, when a very successful garden party had been held, over 400 Institute members from different parts of South Canterbury having been present on this occasion. Addresses had been given on “Early Orari History,” “Saifloa,” “First Aid,” “Child Psychology,” Interest had been taken in country dancing, and the Orari team had been successful in tying with the Arundel team for the cup presented in a competition arranged by the Canterbury Federation. As a result of Miss Stops’s visit in May renewed interest had been taken in various handcrafts. The Institute had taken a prominent part in a Thrift Exhibition arranged by the Federation, held in August last. A tribute was paid to the good work done by the committee, especially to the secretary who had efficiently carried out her duties.

The balance sheet, which showed a successful year’s working was read as follows: —Cash in hand, £25/10/4; membership fees, £7/11/-; sales, 15/11; badges, £l/1/-; subscriptions, 12/-; total, £35/10/3. Expenditure shown was: Affiiliation fees, £l/11/6; birthday cake, £l/6/11; tea and sugar, 15/8; subscriptions, £l6/12/-; rent, £3/2/-; stationery, 16/-; petrol, 4/6; badges, £l/16/-; advertising, 7/6; folk dance record and entry, 7/10; petty cash, £l/2/5; total, £27/4/4; leaving a credit balance of £7/5/11.

The report and balance sheet were adopted. Mr W E. Cook and Mr H. Killoh, scrutineers, conducted the election for the new committee, which resulted as follows:—Mrs H. A. Brenton, Mrs D. Bennett, Mrs W. E. Cook, Miss De Latour, Miss Kiely, Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald, Miss McQueen, Mrs W. Hughes, Mrs Roberts, Mrs S. Unwin. Mrs Macdonald was unanimously re-elected president. Arrangements for the birthday party were discussed. It was decided to hold the party in April. Mrs A. Priddle kindly offered to make a birthday cake. The following committees were set up: —Tea Committee, Mesdames Hughes. Mason, Chambers, Smith and Miss McQueen; Entertainment Committee, Mrs S. Unwin, Misses Killoh, Kiely, E. Blissett, K. Muff and De Latour.

It was decided to invite Miss Stops to speak at the next general meeting, and in future to arrange for six hostesses at each meeting

An appeal for help on Poppy Day was received from. the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Geraldine, and Mrs Bligh and Miss Taylor offered to assist with the sale of poppies in Orari on that day. A feature of the afternoon was some country dancing in which many members enthusiastically took part. This was followed by a game, musical parcels, Mi’s W. E Cook proving the winner.

The prize for the member who had gained most points in the competitions during the year was won by Mrs H. A. Brenton, and the trophy was presented to her by Mrs Macdonald. Two new members, Mrs Irvine and Miss Shone Paqne were elected. Afternoon tea was handed round, the hostesses being Mrs C. Unwin, Mrs S. Unwin, Mrs J. Trimen, and Miss M. Killoh.

A committee meeting was held at the close of the general meeting at which Mrs Geo. Worner and Miss F. E. Grimsey were elected to the committee Mrs Cook was re-elected secretary, and Miss De Latour treasurer.
