Y.M.C.A. CARNIVAL.

TUG-OF-WAR CONTEST. KEEN PUBLIC INTEREST. Again last night at the Unitarian Hall, the Carnival conducted in aid of the Timaru Y.M.C.A. was well patronised. The stalls and games were liberally supported, w'hile the tug-af-war contests were full of excitement. Prior to the opening of the Carnival the Timaru Municipal Band played selections outside the hall. Tug-of-war results were:— B. GRADE. Military Stores (57.7) v. Rowing Club (56.5). The first pull of the evening was rather disappointing, the defection of two of the Stores’ ordinary team making a big difference to their pulling strength. At the gong, Rowing Club jumped off with a three-inch lead, which they increased to five inches. At the commencement of the second minute the indicator pointed in Rowing Club’s favour to the extend of six inches, which Military Stores soon reduced to six, their opponents letting it remain at this. The final sixty seconds saw Rowing Club with the indicator over nearly as far as x it would go. Despite efforts on the part of Military Stores, Rowing Club ran out easy winners by five inches. Enfield (56-10) v. Glen-iti (56.3). Glen-iti were first to establish a lead in the best pull of the evening. Both lights were then out, and the first session ended slightly in Glen-iti’s favour. In the second minute Glen-iti increased their lead to. an inch, but for some seconds the lights flashed alternately. Enfield had a slight lead at the commencement of the final minute, but this was soon reduced to a fraction of an inch. The two lights continued to flash at different intervals, till with a concerted heave Glen-iti forged ahead by two inches, which they held to win. C. GRADE. Y.M.C.A. (52.4) v. Scouts (50.8) The second contest of the evening was rather one-sided. During the opening stage, Y.M.C.A. held an inch advantage, which at the end of the session was increased to two inches. In the second minute Y.M.C.A. were content to hold the lead at two inches, and when commencing the final minute they had three inches on their opponents, the Scouts’ light having failed to shine. Y.M.C.A. scored a popular win by four inches. A. GRADE. Military Stores (62.6) v. Quarry (62.5). In the only five-minute pull of the night, Quarry scored an easy victory over Military Stores, who, after the first minute, were unable to secure any advantage. At the start both lights were in evidence, but .on settling down Quarry established a two-inch lead which they held for the first minute. At the end of two minutes Quarry haa four inches showing, and this they maintained for the next session. At four minutes the leaders seemed sure of success with the indicator five inches in their favour, and they were not troubled, forging ahead again during the last thirty seconds to win by six inches. CHALLENGE PULL. Technical College (49.7) v. Y.M.C.A. (45.10). This contest was full of excitement, the teams being evenly matched. The issue was in doubt till the last thirty seconds, when Y.M.C.A. snatched victory by two inches. The Carnival promises to have universal interest to-night, when the entertainment is to be supplemented by a party of Temuka Maoris. Included in their items will be songs, pois, hakas and dances. A heavy Temuka Maori tug-of-war team is to try conclusions with a Post and Telegraph linesmen’s side, w'hile the semi-finals in some cf the events will be contested. DRAW FOR FRIDAY. C.
