Two firemen, finding it impossible to enter a room by a ladder, donned gas masks and fought their way through a blazing upstairs dormitory of Wilde Oak House, Taunton, a nursing home, and snatched four infants from cots and then collapsed with them outside. Three infants died, and a fourth was burned. It may recover. The firemen were sent to hospital. Nurses, in night attire, and boys from the adjacent school, assisted in the rescue of 29 other children. One nurse was injured. The Matron collapsed from shock.
