CANADA PROTESTS.
SINKING OF JOSEPHINE. United Press Association—Bv Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, March 17. The Canadian Government, through its Legation here, formally protested on Tuesday against the recent sinking of the Canadian vessel Josephine. [Captain William Cluett, of Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, died in the United States Marine Hospital, Staten Island, of wounds received when a Coastguard cutter shelled an alleged rum boat, the British vessel, Joseph K., registered at Digby, Nova Scotia, of which Cluett was master. The Coastguard officers stated that the cutter discovered the British ship transferring liquor to a tug and a barge, near Ambrose Channel. The cutter fired blank shells as a warning, whereupon Captain duett’s ship tried to escape. One pound shells were then fired, one striking the pilot house, in which the master was found wounded when the boat stopped. Coastguardsmen boarded the boat, and took Captain Cluett to hospital, and seized the Josephine K., also the tug and barge, with the alleged liquor.]
