QUINNAT SALMON.
RUN COMMENCES IN RANGITATA. Quinnat salmon, which usually make their appearance in the Rangitata River early in February, are later than usual this year, the run commencing in the latter part of last week. Odd fish were caught in the early part of last week, but it was really not until Saturday that the run set in in earnest. On Saturday over 20 rods were operating at the mouth of the river, and in all about twenty fish were caught, averaging from 17 to 181bs. One or two fish scaled slightly more, and it is understood that a fish weighing 281bs was landed on the Ashburton side of the river. , The fishing ground at the mouth of the river is in excellent order. The river is in splendid order, and is running straight out to sea. Among those who so far have been successful are Messrs D. Smith, J. Wain, E. Yelland, S. Watt, L. Trumper, J. Lysaght, G. Hadlee, A. Ensor, J. Rush, D. Sinclair, D. Cosgrove, Hislop (senr. and junr.), T. Winter, J. Cosgrove, and R. McCallum.
