FAIRLIE.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The annual meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall, the president, Mrs Mac William, presiding over a large attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed with the sufferers in the Hawke’s Bay earthquake. The annual report stated that the Fairlie Institute had been in existence since June, 1930. and to date 103 members had been enrolled. Meetings had been held every month except January. The average attendance had been 50 to 75 members. Lectures, demonstrations, and competitons had been held at these meetings, and interesting and instructive demonstrations had been given in glove making, leather tooling, sealing wax, Christmas cake icing, smocking, papier mache, and passe partout. The Committee thanked all those who had, by addresses and demonstrations, contributed to the success of the Institute. The Press nad rendered most valuable assistance in publishing monthly reports. Thanks were also due to Mrs Shears and Mrs Mac William as accompanists, and to Miss Duncan and Mr Fraser for typing, jMr Lyons, auditing, and the Rev. | Fordyce and the Rev. Father Outtrim for acting as scrutineers. The balance sheet showed a satisfactory credit. The president reported that letters of thanks had been received from Mrs Turner-Williams, Hawke’s Bay, for valuable parcels of clothing sent from Fairlie Institute. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs M. L. West; committee, Mesdames Mac Williams, Morris, S. Gillingham, Fraser, Loughnan, Anniss, Read, Hall, Barnes and R. Manchester. The social committee provided community singing and the Rev. Father Outtrim contributed several songs which were fully appreciated. Afternoon tea was presided over by Mesdames Mackenzies, Welsh, Bayne, Hannigan, Pickering, Irving, and P. O’Connor. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and Committee for excellent work done during the Institute’s first year. FIRE BRIGADE. The monthly meeting of the Fairlie Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday, Captain Close presided over a good attendance. The chairman reported that during the month, there had been one alarm. The Brigade made a quick turn-out, but as the fire had been subdued thenservices were not required. The caretakers had done good work, and the rooms, engine and plant were in good order. Arrangements for the annual dance to be held at Easter were made. Fireman W. Gardener, who was to leave on Friday to attend the Conference at Nelson as the Brigade’s representative, was tendered the best wishes of the Brigade for a pleasant trip. After discussing several minor matters, and appointing caretakers for the month, the meeting closed.
