OPIUM FORTRESS.
PROPRIETOR HEAVILY FINED. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. March 7. Ah Chung (36 >, laundryman. was fined £75 for using premises occupied by him for opium smoking. The premises were those which the police on raiding found great difficulty in entering. Defendant’s counsel said he was an opium addict, and had to smoke it to live. There was no hope of reformation. The Detective-Sergeant said the police objected to landlords allowing premises to be barred and barricaded. The place was an absolute fortress, which took the police an hour to break.
