GERALDINE.

RAIN STOPS SPORT. s< Wet weather on Saturday made it impossible to carry out sports fixtures, and the cricket with Timaru and the tennis match with Temuka were abandoned. STONE WALL COMPLETED. Commenced over two years ago as one of the beautifying schemes of the Geraldine Town and District Association, the rubble wall that bounds the reserve along Waihi Terrace has been completed. It is a wonderful improvement over the rough barbed wire fence that it has replaced. The wall should remain a monument of the work of the Association for many years, and it is also serving a very practical purpose in protecting the water supply stream from the dogs that bathed in its cool waters in “the bad old days.” Before the wall was completed, it was necessary to widen Waihi Terrace, and this useful work was carried out with the spoil removed during the recent txcavations in Macdonald Street. DANCE AT EALING. Under the auspices of the Ealing Basketball Club, a successful dance was held in the Ealing Hall on Friday evening in aid of the earthquake funds. A varied programme was enjoyed by the goodly number present. ‘SUGAR FOR THE JAM.” Quite a number of people in Geraldine have recently reported having had their gardens and orchards robbed, and the thefts in a number of occasions have been particularly despicable. One labouring man found that his attempt at growing sufficient vegetables | "or his personal needs in an endeavour to cut household expenses had proved abortive, owing to the fact that some person had taken a fancy to the fruits of his labours and had removed them by stealth during the night. The theft is particularly mean as the man is net in regular employment. Several cases of orchards being robbed are reported. As there is no one in Geraldine who will see another m need, the stripping of fruit trees is far from warranted. In fact, as one person remarked: ‘‘lf they had asked I would have willingly given the fruit I had to spare.” PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr W. Neutze, of Timaru, is visiting his parents in Geraldine. Mr K. Paterson, of Geraldne, has returned from a holiday visit to Dunedin. Miss Hassell. North Street, Timaru. is spending a few days with friends in Geraldine. SHOW ENTRIES CLOSE THURSDAY The annual show of the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association is now only a few weeks off, and entries close on Thursday. SCOUTS RETURN FROM RALLY. The party of Geraldine Boy Scouts and Geraldine and Woodbury Girl Guides returned on Saturday evening from the Baden-Powell rally, after a very enjoyable day at Addington. The Geraldine Scouts were under the charge of Scoutmaster F. J. C. Turner and Assistant Scoutmaster Bennington; the Geraldine Guides under Captain Woolley, and the Woodbury Guides under Acting-Captain C. Flatman. A number of the Scout Committee also made the journey. RAIN CLEARS AWAY. Following a day’s steady downpour, the rain cleared away yesterday, and a dull, overcast Sunday was experienced. Throughout the day the mountains were obscured by low-lying clouds, and there was an absence of the usual pleasure-seeking motor traffic on the main highway. John R Procter, the Premier Opticians, of Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine, and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel, on March 25th.
