Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting are due at 9 o’clock to-morrow (Tuesday). The annual meeting of the Timaru Ladies’ Golf Club will be held to-night in Mr A. C. Martin’s office. “It is rather a pity that the numberplates of cars are not inscribed with the counties and districts in which they are issued,” remarked Mr Edwin Thomas at the Waikato agency meeting of the Auckland Automobile Association. The president (Mr H. Toombs) said the observant motorist could tell the place from which cards came by the numbers. It was, indeed, possible to play poker with the numbers on passing cars. He had heard of “Straights” and “routine flushes” being secured. Prices for rabbit skins having fallen to a level where it was no longer profitable to trap or poison rabbits, many men who at one time spent months at their work forsook it for ventures more remunerative. The result of the abandonment of the rabbit extermination campaign is becoming more apparent each week. Motorists report that in all parts of Canterbury, and especially in the vicinity of the riverbeds, rabbits are swarming on the roads at night. A traveller on the grass road from Dromore to Hatfield on a recent evening stated that ne doubted if he had seen so many rabbits on one stretch of road before. Motorists who passed through the Geraldine and Ashburton counties also saw large numbers of rabbits on the reads, one car, without special effort killing two rabbits and a hare in a mat ter of 10 miles.
