TRIANGULAR MATCH. TIMARU, ASHBURTON AND OAMARU. On Saturday the Timaru Defence Rifle Club fired a triangular match with Ashburton and Oamaru on the Timaru range. The day set in wet, but Jjy lunch time looked as though it would clear. However, light rain still fell until about 3.30 when it came on heavily and at times was so wet that one could hardly see the targets at 600. In spite of the wet day, every mail selected in the Ashburton and Oamaru teams turned up, and all except one in the Timaru, his place being filled by an emergency. The conditions for the day were shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards. At 300 the Ashburton president (D. Keir) made a start for his team by registering a possible, his board reading 5555555-35. The next two highest scores registered at this range were also by Ashburton men, G. Cromie and J. Yeandle scoring 33 each. Ashburton were ten points in the lead of Timaru, and 24 points ahead of Oamaru at the conclusion of the first range.

At 500 yards, A. Doran (Oamaru) was the leading man with a possible; his board read 5555555-35. President Keir (Ashburton) started of with four bulls, and looked as if he was to have another possible, but the next was a 4. He finished with two bulls, making 34 for the range, 69 out of a possible 70 for the two ranges. There were three others who missed the possible by one point—G. Carmichael and W. Bradshaw (Timaru), and C. Glassy (Ashburton). At this range Timaru had the best total, 325 points, Ashburton 320 and Oamaru 310, leaving Ashburton 5 points ahead of Timaru. The home team provided afternoon tea for the visitors, and at 4.30 a start was made at 600 yards in heavy rain. The only good scores were recorded by H. Koppert (Oamaru), E. Truman (Ashburton) and C. Blackwood (Timaru), each with 32. Ashburton gained a further 4 points on Timaru, making them winners by 9 points. At the conclusion of the shoot the Timaru Club entertained the visitors to tea at Pateman’s rooms.
