HARRIERS.

TIMARU METHODIST CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The first annual meeting of the Timaru Methodist Harrier Club was held last night. The president (Rev. H. r. Peat) presided over a large attendance of members. The chairman expressed pleasure at having been associated with the Club during the year, and said that he felt sure that every member had benefitted considerably as a result of the activities of the Club. The sport was a splendid one, and would help them to live nobler and better lives, which would be to the advantage of the citizenship of the Dominion. Annual Report. The annual report commenced by extending thanks to Mr Rex Metson for his perseverance and hard work in bringing about the formation of the Club. Since its inception, the C*ub had never looked back and in all things in which it had participated, it had performed with credit. The Club commenced the season with a membership of nineteen, which gradually increased until at the peak of the year, there was a roll of 32 members. The average active attendance at weekly runs was nineteen. The Club was unfortunate in losing several members through illness, examinations and transfers to other towns. The honours went to Messrs A. Foden, W. Holmes and E. Sutherland who throughout the season never missed a Saturday’s run. Some very good runs in conjunction with the other town clubs were held and these served to show that rivalry in these runs was very keen. In the seven-mile inter-club South Canterbury championship, the Club was fortunate in carrying off the championship, thus taking the Orr-Walker Cup for the first year. The team in this event was: R. Nelson (captain), R. Lund, H. Cullimore, E. Wilson, L. Wilson and W. McPhedran.

In a seven-mile handicap at Waimate, open to any member of a harrier club, E. Wilson and R. Lund, by running a good race, secured first and second places respectively from a big field in one of the most severe races held throughout the season. The Club also held three races during the season. Through the kindness of the Church Trustees, the Hall was placed at the Club’s disposal for one night per week for training purposes, and this enabled members to work in together with their training runs. The Club had a very satisfactory season financially, having a credit balance of £5/8/8. The total amount received in cash was £27/0/9, and expenditure was £2l/12/1, leaving a balance of £5/8/8 cash in hand. Included in the above were donations from Messrs Metson, Mathews, Drennan and Fenwick. For the many wajs in which they had rendered service to the Club throughout the season, thanks were due to the Rev. H. T. Peat (president), and also to Mr E. C. J. Foot (chairman). Both had given considerable time to the affairs of the Cluo, and had worked hard to ensure success in its first year. The Club was indebted to the following for entertaining throughout the season:—Rev. and Mrs Peat, Mr and Mrs Metson. Mr and Mrs Raseveafre, Mr and Mrs Butcher, Mrs J. E. Hurdley, Mr and Mrs Simmons, Mr and Mrs J. Nelson, Mr C. Don, Mr and Mrs Lund, the Woodlands Street Methodist Ladies’ Guild, the members of the Girls’ Bible Classes (Woodlands and Waimataitai), and Mr and Mrs Shortus. Thanks were due to the foi- ' lowing for transport:—Rev. H. T. Peat, 1 Messrs C Don, J. Butcher, H s W. Beau- j mont, G. McKessar, C. Lund, and Vin- t cent. Also to the following gentlemen for donations:—Rev. H. T. Peat, Messrs I F. Metson, F. Mathews, J. Drennan, R. Fenwick; for trophies, Messrs Lund, Beaumont, Firkin, Priest and Holdgate, A. Foden, Butler and A. Hurdley. Congratulations were due to the members of the Committee on the way in which they worked in the interests of the Club, and on the fine example they had shown to the other members in Club spirit. Mr A. Foden and the president eulogised the fine work done by the secretary during the year, both speakers stating that members were greatly indebted to Mr Hurdley for the keen interest he had taken in the affairs of the Club.
