SHARK IN HARBOUR.
FIRST SEEN FOR TWELVE YEARS. CHASES DOG FROM WATER. A grey shark, six to seven feet lit length was noticed in Timaru Harbour yesterday, swimming in the vicinity of the boat landing at No. 1 wharf. It was later seen in different parts of the harbour, and the harbourmaster (Captain D. McDougall). and members of his staff, were amongst those who testified as to its length. A small black dog. which was swimming yesterday morning in the shallow part between No. 1 and No. 2 wharves, was scented by the shark, which chased the animal right inshore to the rocks. A dead dog, floating in the vicinity for the best part of the morning, was not touched. “This is the first time I have seen a shark in the harbour lor twelve years,” said the harbourmaster to a "Herald” representative yesterday, "and this one is certainly a big fellow.” He said that his staff had been working about the harbour during the morning, and had seen the unwelcome visitor on more than one occasion. "If the shark would chase a small dog out of the water there is no saying what he might do to a bather,” he said. It is the custom of some early-morn-ing swimmers to take to the sea from the Rowing Club steps, but in view of the fact that the shark is a frequent visitor to that locality, these men would be well advised to discontinue swimming there until all is clear.
