HAMILTON SESSION. By Telegraph—Press Association HAMILTON, March 4. Expressing a wish that they did not desire to hear the defence, the jury acquitted Henry Stanley Pratt (19), of a charge of illegal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16. A verdict of not guilty on both charges was returned in a case which David Mclvor, middle aged, was charged with attempted breaking and entering, and of being found in possession of house-breaking tools. The Crown evidence went to show that accused was seen at the rear of a shop in company with another man who had recently pleaded guilty to an offence. The defence held that accused accompanied a companion to the rear of the shop to share a bottle of beer after the offence had been committed. RECEIVING STOLEN GOODS. By Telegraph—Press Association GREYMOUTH, March 4. In the Supreme Court, Lionel George Hood and John Joseph Morris were convicted on a charge of receiving a quantity of jewellery, knowing the same to have been stolen from the shop of John Tennent, jeweller, Greymouth. The jury acquitted accused on a charge of breaking, entering and theft of the jewellery. Sentence was deferred till to-morrow. ROBBED ROOM MATE. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 4. Stated to have been arrested at Palmerston North, and sentenced to three months for vagrancy, while posing as a refugee, Raymond Ralph Roberts (22), appeared before Mr E. Page, S.M., on a charge of the theft from one Peterson, at Hastings, nearly a year ago, of articles valued at £ll 9s sd. Being destitute, it was stated that he was sent to a boardinghouse by the Welfare Society, sharing a room with Peterson, and taking advantage of his going to work one day to rob him. THEFTS BY SOLICITOR. By Telegraph—Press Association TE KUITI, March 4. Athol Feilding Howarth, formerly solicitor at Te Kuiti, appeared on remand this morning, pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence at the Supreme Court at Hamilton on March 6 on a charge of the theft of £3OO from Thomas Smith, carpenter, Te Kuiti, and £643/10/5 from Allan Cameron Smith, formerly of Otorohanga, now of Tauranga. Bail was allowed the accused in his own recognisances of £2OO, and two others each of £2OO.
