The dainty figure-dancing of a group of Mexican chorus girls, became a horrible scramble for life, when a fire broke out at the end of a performance in the historic Theatre Principal, which for 178 years had been the foremost local theatre. There are fourteen dead at least and twelve gravely injured. More fatalities are feared among the players, who were trapped behind the curtain and scenery, but the rescuers were unable to recover the bodies from the mass of twisted steel and charred timbers. Prominent actresses Lupe Rosales and Carmen Velasco were killed. The latter escaped, but ran back into the flames in an attempt to rescue a friend in the audience, and the famous comedian Roberto Soto, escaped uninjured.
