NEWS AND NOTES.

H. Allchurch and Co. sell at the Rialto to-day, New Year poultry, strawberries, etc

Annoyance is caused by people taking dogs on to Caroline Bay. A number of dogs are at present on the Bay without registration collars, and these will be destroyed. Some people take dogs to the Bay on a lead, but on getting to the sand the dogs are allowed to wander and become a nuisance. Such a breach of the by-laws renders the offender liable to a fine up to £2O. A notice appears elsewhere that proceedings will be taken forthwith for any further breach of the by-law.

When it comes to happy matchmaking Greta Green is not in it with a leading Timaru mercer. One case in particular: The girl turned him down, would have nought of him. In despair the unhappy swain opened up his heart to Cameron—the mercer in question, who, with quick perception, picked the cause of the trouble—shabbiness. The new rig-out made her sit up and take notice, but it was really the new hat which decided her. Smart, snappy, and the latest shade, and all this happiness only cost him 15/6. A few left at Cameron’s—they’re English felts too
