TEMUKA

CRICKET. The Hutt junior B. cricket team, under the managership of Mr R. Ball, arrived in Temuka yesterday morning, and in the afternoon commenced a two day's match with a combined TemukaGeraldine team. The home team took first strike, and the innings concluded for the moderate score of 88. To this total, there were only two double Igure contributors—Dixon 21 and Turner 30, both members of the Geraldine Club. Both gave a free exhibition, but Turner lost his wicket by hitting back a catch from a ball that was going over his head. Bowling honours went to C. Muir, Lockett and Drennan, who secured 4 for 51, 4 for 14, and 2 for 14 respectively. In their strike, Hutt fared much better, and at the close of the day’s play had scored 215 for nine wickets, the principal scorers, McSherry 57 and Hammond 64 not out, giving the home team considerable leather hunting. Following are the scores:— TEMUKA-GERALDINE. First Innings.

1.0.0. F. The fortnightly meeting of the Waitea Rebekah Lodge was held on 23rd December, Sister Ludemann, P.N.G., presiding in the absence of the Noble Grand. The Visiting Committee reported one sister on the sick list, while a sister who had been ill was improving and was now able to declare off the list.

Accounts amounting to £2/18/- were passed for payment. Seasonal greetings were received from a number of the Lodges in surrounding districts. A vote of thanks was passed to all who had helped with the children’s Christmas tree party, and to the mothers who had helped with the tea. Lodge closed in due form, after which supper was served. BURGLARY. On Saturday night a storeroom at the rear of the bakery shop of Mr E. J. Chapman, King Street, was burglariously entered. Ingress was gained by forcing the back door, and sugar seemed to have attracted most attention from the thief or thieves. CHRISTMAS CHEER. Over 30 children benefited by the fund provided by the Temuka R.S.A. to provide Christmas Cheer in cases where returned soldiers found they were not in a position to “treat” their children as in past years. A gift of 2/6 to each child was received by the mothers, who, in practically every case, expressed thanks to the R.S.A. for their generous assistance. GENERAL NEWS. Another fine sunny day was experienced in Temuka yesterday. The Salvation Army campers in the Temuka Domain have been favoured with splendid weather since arriving in Temuka last Friday. For the most part, yesterday was given up to swimming and games, while last night an enjoyable concert was given.

Henderson, Ashburton, is spending a few days’ holiday in Temuka. Mr lan Scrimshaw, Christchurch, and Allan Scrimshaw, Wellington, are spending their holidays with their parents. Mrs Slowley senr. and Miss Lois Slowley, of Dunedin, are holidaying in Temuka, and are the guests of Mr and Mrs R. Richards. Birkett Street. Mr W. A. Slowley, of Dunedin, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs R. Richards, left yesterday for the north. GLENN TRYON IN “THE KID’S CLEVER.” Each time Glenn Tryon, Universal star, plans a picture, he and his director plan new and unique contrivances to use as gags in the production. In “The Kid’s Clever,” to be shown at Temuka to-night, there aie many such gadgets, the products of the brains of the star and the director, William James Craft. Among the strange devices is a fuelless combination automobile and speedboat, which is supposed to be an invention of Tryon’s, who plays the role of a young mechanical wizard. When Tryon and Craft hit upon the idea of using such a craft in their picture, their plan met with no little objection. While studio executives had no objection to using either an automobile or a speedboat, they did not see how a combination of the two would be practical. But Glenn and his director won out, and the craft was built. An admirable cast supports Tryon. It includes Kathryn Crawford, Russell Simpson, Lloyd Whitlock, George Chandler, Joan Standing, and others.
