BAY CARNIVAL.

SATURDAY’S ACTIVITIES. CONTINUED SUCCESS. The Caroline Bay Association have so far been very fortunate on the success of their annual Carnival, both from an entertaining and financial point of view. Weather conditions also have favoured the event, Saturday being ideal for a day on the Bay. Seldom has the Bay presented such a Carnival-like appearance, as it did on Saturday afternoon. The sands were alive with people in the afternoon, while the Carnival area was a scene of great activity. At night the brilliantly illuminated stalls, amusement park, and hall presented an inspiring sight, while the voluntary helpers at the stalls felt gratified at the response from the public. Rush For Parachutes. Activities commenced at 10 a.m. on Saturday, when Captain J. C. Mercer, instructor to the Canterbury Aero Club, piloted an aeroplane over the Bay and dropped from it several small parachutes, one of which contained a ticket for a free flight. Interest in the aeroplane was most pronounced, and as the parachutes were dropped and unfurled, their progress was watched by hundreds of eager children. There was a great rush as they landed, the successful competitor being Master Athol Hillier. The secretary to the Association (Mr J. P. Lamb) stated that the event had created so much interest as to warrant, of possible, a continuation during the progress of the Carnival. Children's Races. Hundreds of enthusiastic children assembled at the south of the band rotunda at 10.30, when several races were contested. There was a big improvement in the number of competitors, and the races were a great success. Included in the programme were special races of 100 and 75 yards for boys and girls respectively, the prizes, a doll and a camera, being donated by the representative of Player's cigarettes. Douglas Andrews and Mary Moore received their prizes from the president of the Association (Mr A. Wotherspoon), who thanked the donor for his kindness. Balloons were then handed to nearly every child. “ Sandflys” Concert Party. The “Santjflys” were greeted by enthusiastic audiences at the rotunda in the afternoon and evening, and their offerings again proved very acceptable. This versatile party has been greatlyappreciated. The following programme has been arranged for to-day;—Open-ing chorus, topical; song. “Lady Luck,” Jim Macfarlane and Miss Tui Northey; comedy, “Even So Goosey,” J. WilsonBrown; song, “Should I.” Miss Alma Finnerty; sketch, “Banana”; song, selected, Reg. Richards; song, “Any Time’s a Time to Fall in Love,” Miss Tui Northey and Jim Macfarlane; sketch, “Ah!”; song, “Rose of Yesterday,” Reg Richards and Miss Rita Holmes; song, “For You Alone.” J. Davies, Welsh tenor; finale, “Let’s All Pull Together.” Sand Modelling-. There was an even larger number of competitors for the sand modelling, and again the standard of the work was very high. The judges. Miss M. Bowen, Mrs E. Burns, and Mr A. McNamara, made the following awards- — 10 to 12 years—Colin Griffiths 1, June Henderson 2. Albert Bayliss 3; 6 to 8 years—Daphne Bayliss 1, Willie Middlemiss 2. Edna Newman 3; 8 to 10 years—Jack Lyttle 1, Arthur Shepherd 2, Robert Moffatt 3; 12 to 14 years— Daisy Tregenza 1, Doris Wilson 2. Joan Buckley 3. Evening Programme. The attendance was well maintained in the evening, when the weather was favourable, despite a light south-east-erly breeze. The stalls and the amusement park attracted a .great deal of interest, but the concert party and the Municipal Band were also accorded a fair measure of patronage. In each case the programmes contained items of an enjoyable nature. The evening’s festivities concluded with the usual dance which was very well attended, and proved a complete success.
