NOVELTIES IN FOOTWEAR

One of the novelties in the new season’s footwear is shoes made of tweed in a very close weave, and specially shrunk to prevent stretching. All the best tweed designs this year, by the way, are neat and geometric, so are specially adaptable for shoes.

This particular shoe has heels of kid in the dominant note of the tweed, and are worn with tweed stockinette dresses and suits for town wear. These are the happy result of many experiments made with various woollen materials, and are delightfully soft to wear. They come in smart colours, like brown and biege, black and white, and navy and white.

The reptile shoe is being made much softer, as many women acquired reptile feet. The swelling and tenderness Is due to the unyielding texture of the reptile’s hide. Now the chief offenders, lizard and crocodile, can be had much softer, also python and sea snake, and other curious reptiles. These are in great demand both for entire shoes or trimmings on glace and antelope.

The court shoe continues to be one of the smartest shoes when seen on the right foot, and there are new laced shoes with high heels. Many women find it difficult to keep court shoes on as they need to be a little shorter than usual to stay on, and few women like a shoe that hurts. Only very healthy feet, that never swell, are at ease in a court shoe, and even these are not improved by wearing court shapes constantly. The high, straight heel, which is so fashionable, is also a cause of complaint. They break off, and are anything but smart; also parts frequently chip off, as they are of wood. The chiropodists and the foot surgeons have largely increased their practice of recent years, since elderly women who formerly were content with low heels and comfortable shoes, have taken to wearing smart footwear. Now, however, there are more straps and laced shoes, with the lacing ending fairly low in the vamp, being worn.
