FINE WEATHER CONTINUES. The fine weather continued yesterday afternoon, and most people spent the half-holiday out of doors. The main attraction at Geraldine was the representative football match played between Geraldine and the Mackenzie Sub-Union’s team. Rain commenced to fall in the evening. EALING WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The August meeting of the Ealing Women’s Institute was held in the Library Hall, when Mrs Davis presided over a good attendance of members. After the business of the meeting was put through, Mrs K. J. Mackenzie, gave an interesting talk on Poultry Raising. Mrs J. Withell proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Mackenzie. Four new members were elected. The sugar bag competition was won by Mrs Ernest Davis, and Mrs B. Withell second. After an enjoyable cup of tea, the meeting dispersed. The hostesses for next meeting are to be Mrs J. Withell, Mrs Keen, and Mrs Peirce. RUGBY MATCH. In a Rugby match played between the Mackenzie County Sub-Union and Geraldine District, on the Geraldine Oval yesterday afternoon, the home fifteen proved victorious by eighteen points to nine. Over two hundred people were ati tracted to witness the game, which was played on a ground in excellent trim. The visiting players were handicapped by the loss of a number of their players who were taking part in a Club game at Fairlie, nevertheless they put up a very good showing against a heavier team. The heavier Geraldine forwards had the advantage in the scrums, but the backs did not make the use of it they might have. The visiting backs had better combination, but saw little of the ball, and found most of their time absorbed in defensive work. All the Geraldine forwards were hard workers, Callanan and Fergusson being outstanding, while Mackenzie’s best forwards were S. Benson, Buckley and Bracken. The visiting backs Dale and Perry came most in the limelight, while for the home side Angland and Neutze were prominent. L. Wood proved a safe full back. The teams lined out as follows: GERALDINE DISTRICT. (Red and Black) L. Wood A. Bryant L. Neutze J. Morrison W. Angland F. Sherratt G. Smith T. Watson J. Callanan R. Neutze W. South U. Meecham B. Fergusson Dan Callanan Geo. Webb MACKENZIE COUNTY. (Blue and White) Simpson T. Creighton J. Campbell F. O’Connor H. Bracken S. Dale E. Perry S. Benson A. Crampton D. Cameron M. Buckley W. Robertson J. Bracken W. Perry M. McVey Geraldine kicked off and play went to the centre of the field. Callanan with a good kick put Geraldine on attack, and South made an opening from which W. Angland scored near the posts. L. Woods converted. Geraldine 5, Mackenzie 0. From the kickoff the Fairlie forwards took the ball into the Geraldine territory, where Mackenzie were awarded a free kick for a scrum infringement. 1 The kick at goal fell short. Mixed play followed in the Geraldine half, the game at this stage being of a forward nature. For a time a Blue player looked like scoring, but a good tackle by Neutze saved. O’Connor made an attempt to get over following a passing rush, but was brought low. Angland cleared to half way, and L. Neutze again put the Reds on attack with a strong kick. Another scrum infringement earned Geraldine a penalty kick which was taken by J. Callanan. Off-side on the part of a Geraldine player was penalised, and the resulting penalty returned play to half-way. L. Woods with a fine kick gained forty yards for his side. Campbell made a strong run down the line from a passing rush, and a scrum took place at half-way. Benson intercepted, and the Fairlie forwards made a strong attack, but took the ball into the dead area. From the drop-out a Geraldine player was penalised for off-side, and from the scrum the Geraldine forwards rushed to half-way where Dale checked them. A further free kick put Geraldine into an attacking position. In a ruck the Fairlie forwards were caught offside, and Ward’s kick at goal narrowly missed. From loose play Angland broke away to score near the posts, but Wood failed to convert. Geraldine 8, Mackenzie 0. Neutze fielded the penalty kick, and with a good run took play to half-way, where Creighton sent the ball to the line. With a stab kick Smith found the line ten yards up. The ball came to L. The second half commenced with Geraldine attacking. Watson led a rush from half-way to the visitors’ twenty-five, where the Reds were penalised. At this stage L. Neutze missed a pass. Robinson took the Blues to half-way. Benson made a beautiful break away, but found himself on his own. Fast following by Webb and Meechan took play again to the Blue twenty-five, where O’Connor intercepted and returned to half way. The Red forwards handled the ball well in a bout of short passing, but the Mackenzie forwards, led by Buckley, returned well up field, where Simpson added points for his side with a penalty goal. Geraldine 15, Mackenzie 6. The Blue backs opened play up, but were repelled by Callanan. By good combined play Mackenzie went to home territory, where Perry made a futile opening. With a strong kick Morrison gained considerable ground, and Watson, Fergusson and Webb took the ball to the visitors’ line. The defence was sound, however, and play quickly returned to midfield. With a beautiful line kick from half-way, Wood sent the ball out by the corner flag. Simpson went through and took the ball back to half-way. G. Webb placed his side on attack, and twice Geraldine’s efforts to score were frustrated. Dale relieved with an excellent kick. Led by Bracken, Creighton and Campbell the visiting backs made a strong rush and Callanan was penalised for lying on the ball. Simpson’s kick was successful. Geraldine 15, Mackenzie 9. Bryant made a good run down the line, and centred to Morrison, who went across with Campbell. A scrum was awarded and Benson relieved. Angland made an opening but dropped the ball, and Neutze picked up and passed to Morrison who scored at the corner flag. J. Callanan’s kick fell short. Geraldine 18, Mackenzie 9.
