CHRISTCHURCH SESSIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, August 21. In the Supreme Court to-day, Edgar Arthur Barbarel was found guilty of attempting to obtain from the Post Office Savings Bank £lO by means of a forged withdrawal slip. August John Barbarel, brother of accused, stole his father-in-law’s Post Office bank book, and when the father-in-law discovered the theft he found also that £220 had been withdrawn from his account. The Crown case against Edgar Barbarel was that he attempted to cash a slip forged by Arthur Barbarel. William Charles Burke was found guilty of having failed to account for three sums, £llO 10s in all, to the New Zealand Investment Co.. Ltd., received i by him for the sale of bonds. Accused ■ had been a salesman for the Company but had been dismissed. The Crown I case was that he sold the bonds and retained the money. | Accused, in defence, said he put the ! money in notes in an envelope, and ! remitted it to the Christchurch agent of the company, one John Somerville Jones. Jones denied having received the money. Allan Howard was charged with breaches of the Bankruptcy Act—failing to discover all his property to the Assignee, failing to keep proper books, ! and that he made material omissions in a statement to the Assignee. Howard was found guilty on the charge of failing to keep proper books, and not guilty on the other charges. All the prisoners were remanded for sentence. ALLEGED THEFT OF UNION MONEYS. By Telegraph—Press Association. NELSON, August 21. At Takaka, Francis Thomas Edward Bird was charged with receiving moneys amounting to £69, on account of the Golden Bay Cement Company’s employees industrial Union, and failing to account for same, thereby committing theft.
Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
