PRISONER RECAPTURED.

GRUBBING GORSE AT LEESTON. By Telegraph—Pres* Association CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 21. Timothy Cosgrove, who escaped from Paparua prison recently, was arrested at Leeston at 2.30 p.m. to-day, by Constable Moriarty. When found. Cosgrove was engaged in grubbing gorse on the side of the road, being in the employ of a farmer. The arrest was made in Gillander’s Lane, twenty miles from Leeston, on the way to Hororata. The constables who made the arrest were Constables Moriarty and Connelly, of Southbridge, who went to the scene to investigate private information which they had received. The escapee was well nourished, having been employed for a week. He was in prison clothes, and it was not hard to identify him. He had a growth of beard, but had made no attempt to disguise himself. When approached by the constable, Cosgrove, who had a grubber in his hand, was quite peaceable, and made no resistance. He was taken to the cell at Leeston, where the prison authorities took charge of him.

A resident of Christchurch states that he saw Cosgrove in the Selwyn riverbed at Coalgate on Sunday. He reported this fact immediately to the

Coalgate police, and to the Superintendent at Paparua. Cosgrove escaped from Paparua prison on Friday, August 9th. He was working out on the fields, and his escape was discovered when a muster of the prisoners was called at 6 p.m. He was undergoing a sentence of three years’ imprisonment for breaking, entering and theft. Cosgrove was concerned in the famous Longwood robbery of last year, when £4OO, the pay roll of Moore’s mill in Southland, was taken.
