NEW ZEALANDERS DEFEATED IN AUSTRALIA. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received August 3. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 3. There were five thousand spectators at the League match. Metropolis against New Zealand, at the sports ground. A cold westerly blew across the field. The home side won by 39 points to 22. The teams were: New Zealand.—Gregory, Seager, Brisbane, Tittleton, Amos, Dodds, Abbott. Timms, Stephenson, Calder, Griffiths, Dufty, Eckhoff. Metropolis.—McMillan, Hardy. Why. Pearce, Brady, Kadwell, Busch, Matthewson, O’Connor, Cornwall, Root. Justice, Treweeke. The tourists had the best of the early portion of the game, that is best described as ragged. Kadwell. from the scrum, got the ball moving, and Hardy scored near the corner. No goal resulted. Persistent attacks by the New Zealanders were rewarded when Brisbane and Smart cut through the opposing backs and ended by scoring near the posts. Dufty converted. The home side livened up till Kadwell secured the ball from the scrum and scored, Hardy goaling for the home side. After Dufty had kicked a uple of penalty goals, and put New Zealand ahead by nine poinf-s to eight, they became really aggressive. Busch, beating three men, passed to Pearce, who scored and Hardy converted. Just before half time, Why scored after a great run over threequarters of the length of the field, Hardy converting, and the spell ended: Metropolis .. .. 18 New Zealand 9 Poor handling robbed the New Zealanders of several opportunities in the second half. Treweeke tried to relieve the situation, but the only result was a penalty goal by Hardy. Busch and Pearce got over, and Hardy converted one try. The game became warmly contented, and Treweeke and Calder were ordered off for rough play. Tittleton and Seager each scored, after fine runs, even the speediest of opponents failing to arrest them. Dufty converted both. Busch added .wo more tries, and Justice one to the Metropolis total, one of which was ■onverted by Hardy.
