METHODIST CHURCH.

CIRCUIT MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Timaru Methodist Churches was held in the Woodlands Street Church Hall, when there was a very large attendance of delegates from all parts of the circuit. Votes of condolence were carried to the following who had lost loved ones since last meeting:—Mrs P. Downward, Mr H. Tresider. Mrs Field. Mr Brown. The membership reports showed no change from the previous quarter. The balance sheet was presented by the Circuit Treasurer, Mr Bennington, and although a substantial credit was still in hand, nevertheless it was evident that a loss of approximately £lB resulted on the quarter’s working.— It was decided to appoint a committee to examine the envelope system, and its working and this committee to report to the next quarterly meeting. Foreign mission collections were authorised throughout the circuit for September 7th.—A trust collection was authorised for Kensington on September 21. The Young Peoples’ reports were encouraging. A club had been started at Kensington, and a Bible Class was also under way. The Bible Class started at Pareora had an attendance of 30. It was agreed that the Foreign Mission deputation be received in this circuit from 4th to Bth September. The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the work done by Mr T. E. Holdgate as Circuit Foreign Secretary. In view of Mr Holdgate’s retirement; from the position, the meeting appointed Mr H. Beaumont. A Foreign Mission Committee of five was appointed to act with Mr Beaumont. The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the work done by Mr Stewart in assisting “*with the Mission periodical, the “Open Door.” Miss Sandford reported that there were now 100 subscribers. In accepting Mr Stewart’s resignation the meeting asked Mrs McCaffrey to assist Miss Sandford. Owing to the death of Mr P. Downward the position of Circuit agent for the “Methodist Times” became vacant. Mr M. J. Brooker was elected to fill the vacancy. Mr Vogeler being appointed assistant agent. Mr W. G. Irwin gave a report on church property and stated that the work in connection with the alterations and additions at Bank Street were progressing most satisfactorily. The Rev. Mr Cooke reported that the Woodlands Street Church had decided to celebrate its jubilee this year, during November, and that the Jubilee Committee, with the Ladies’ Guild, had in view the erection of a Jubilee Sunday School.

There were no local preachers received or transferred during the quarter. An appeal was made for more motorists to assist in the matter of taking preachers to their appointments. The circuit secretary reported that the Rev. Mr Fiebig had accepted the circuit's invitation to labour in Timaru next year.
