Britain’s New Challenge.
GIANT LINERS BUILDING. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 3, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. August 2. The building of the Cunard Line's projected express liner, on the Clyde, estimated to cost £6.000.000. will be assisted by the Government to the extent of the Board of Trade undertaking. at a premium, a portion of the insurance which the market cannot accommodate in the ordinary manner, owing to the vessel’s exceptional dimensions. The Government is also assisting the insurance of the sister ship. The Cunard Line intends to build the largest and fastest liner in the world. The ship will have a tonnage of 75,000, and a speed exceeding thirty knots. The vessel’s length will be 1000 ft., and she will have accommodation for over 4,000 passengers. It is expected to regain the Atlantic blue riband for Britain. MERGING AMERICAN INTERESTS. BIG FLEETS INVOLVED. United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph—Copyright (Received August 3, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. August 2. The control of the International Mercantile Marine, founded by the late Mr Pierpont Morgan, with a fleet of forty-six vessels, with tonnage of 427,000 tons has passed to the Roosevelt Steamship Company. Messrs Croit Roosevelt, Basil Harris and John M. Franklin, are to be vice-presidents of the new company. Mr P. A. S. Franklin remains president. The disposal of the International Marine foreign tonnage is planned by the new company, in order to develop the American service. It also reported that the Pennsylvania and Baltimore (Ohio), rail and road interests, and the Roosevelt Line, which operates a fleet of twenty-four motor ships, from Atlantic ports to the Far East, it is understood, will merg? with the new company.
