VELVET POPULAR
FOR EARLY SPRING lIATS. In looking back over some of the hat styles of yesterday, one cannot but be thankful that the present day models j aren’t revivals of these patterns. The skirts may return to the old-time longer length, and gloves and feminine frills may be revived but the hats that balanced precariously on top of the high-dressed coiffures can never be resurrected to modem fashions. In their place, tarns, berets, scull caps, softtrimmed shapes and turbans will continue sleekly to cover the close-fitting hair styles in a practicaly and becoming fashion. Norma Shearer, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer star, whose latest picture is “The Divorce,” is enthusiastic over these shaped hats for they give her an opportunity to use her skill at making her own chapeaux. Being adept with the needle she has fashioned many of her own hats, one of velvet ribbon being jarticularly attractive. This hat is fashioned of wide width ribbon sewn together in a close cap shape and finished with a youthful bow which extends across the back. The velvet is in a turqoise blue and is worn with an afternoon frock of the same colour. Pearl drop earrings give a further feminine touch to the costume. Another idea which Miss Shearer carried out in black velvet consists of a square piece of velvet held securely together at the nape of the neck by a narrow piece of ribbon with the ends falling down the back in bandana style. This ’kerchief cap •will be seen in “The Divorce” worn with an attractive black chiffon dinner frock.
