i PRECIOUS YOUNGSTERS. ❖ 4 I have some splendid news for you. Three toys have arrived for * 4 the Christmas Ship already! A fine cuddly “Topsy” doll from “Jane,” * «£ Kaikoura, a jolly scrap-book from “Towser,” Timaru, and a dear wee 4 writing desk from “Smut,” Timaru. 4 4 As you see, I have reprinted the Christmas Competitions for you, 4» f and as several new Circlians have asked me to explain them, I will do 4 so now. %

4 First of all are the Verse-Making and Story-Telling Competi- * 4 tions. Circlians may send me two original poems and two original $ % stories a month. Merit Cards and Marks are awarded for all original v * work printed, and Special Prizes are given at the end of June and 4 4 just before Christmas to the little people who have gained highest 4 marks for Verse-Making or Story-Telling. *

* And now for the five “Christmas Ship*’ Competitions. 4 % I think you all know how to make Scrap-Books. Cutting out 4 4 and pasting pretty pictures into books is one of the jolliest pastimes 4 4 there is. Last year I received ever and ever so many splendid Scrap- J 4 Books, and I know all the little sick-a-beds loved looking at them. 4 4 Any sort of doll may be sent in for the Best Dressed Doll Com- 4 * petition, but the clothes must all be made by hand, and should be 4 *f as dainty and pretty as possible.—Who is my cleverest little needle- 4 woman, I wonder? %

4 As so many jolly, lovable looking “Topsy” dolls were sent in last 4 4 year, a Special Prize was awarded for the best little black lady; and 4 4 this year another Special Prize will be given for the best home-made * 4 dolly. If I haven’t time to-day to tell you how “Topsy” is made, I will 4 % write a special letter about her next Saturday. 4 4 4 4 Last year, entries for the Best Original Toy made by a Girl 4 4 Circlian were many and varied, and, as most of you will remember, 4 the Prize was won by “Flower of the Mist,” who sent in a beautifully- 4 4 made plaything called “The Kewpies’ Party.” Some splendid original * % toys were Dolls’ Houses, Dolls’ Cradles, “Judy” Dolls, Dolls’ Furniture 4 *;* of every description, an elephant on wheels, dogs, cats, and ever so 4 4 many other animals and lovely, well-made toys. And the Competition % 4 fer the Best Toy made by a Boy Circlian brought just as many fine *> 4 original entries. Cleverly made aeroplanes and motor-cars won the 4 * Special Prizes, and among the other toys were trains, balls, puzzly 4 4 games, guns, swords, other war-like looking weapons, and dozens and * 4 dozens of things that small boys love. 4 4 —Can you break last year's wonderful record, Toy-Makers of 4 4 mine? 4

<■> Just a word or two about this new Painting Competition of *> * ours, before I end my letter. I want you to colour it ever so carefully, *** and give it a nicely made frame. And whatever you do, little artists, % * do not forget to find and paint Tommy, who is hiding—well, just see if £ you can find where he is hiding. ❖ * And now I will leave you to start your Toy-Making and Painting. What Airt !£ busy little people you are going to / fCIA * % be!* I JAV i- I | * love, x
