THE FOX AND THE GOAT.

One day a thirsty fox Came upon a well, He said, “I am so thirsty! My thirst none can tell.” And as he tried to reach The sparkling water’s brink, A thirsty goat came by Saying that he would drink. The cunning fox jumped in the well, And told the goat to follow, And he, using not his brains, Sprang in from the hollow. They both drank of the water, Clear and cool and deep, And soon the fox jumped out And said, “Look before you leap!” (3 Marks and a Merit Card awarded to “Vilia,”—lvy Stowell, Pareora West aged 10). THE FAIRIES’ FEAST DAY. The fairies are having a feast to-day, Come on! Come on to it, I say; They’re going to dance, sing and play, On this lovely day in May. Come and see the pretty frocks, And the black and golden locks, And the lovely yellow shoes; Toadstool seats you all may choose. There’ll be decorated shops And sweets and cakes, hurray! Now for tea and spinning tops, —Come on! Come on! To-day! Over hills and over fields While Peter Pan does play, The elves and fairies singing come To dance this bright May day. (3 Marks and a Merit Card awarded to “Pixie the Fairy Queen,” —Audrey Gibson, Southburn, aged 13). THE OWL. The owl he sits upon the tree, He hoots at you he hoots at me; Sitting still with eager eye, To see if any mice pass by. Surely one he does espy, One unwary mouse must die, One little mouse for the owl’s tea, Unless he quickly turns to flee. (1 Mark and a Merit Card awarded to Nancy Ellis, Kingsdown, aged 13).
