TO BRIGHTEN CARPETS.
Colder nights mean more stay at home evenings, and a critical view of hitherto unnoticed shabbiness in the carpets. Here is a suggestion for brightening them. Get a bowl of warm soap suds, add a little cloudy ammonia and rub the carpets with it, using a clean cloth. If the carpet is or was a brightly coloured one, some reliable liquid dye as near to the colour as possible, will act as a freshener if painted on carefully and allowed to dry.
It may even be worth while to follow the pattern of the carpet with two or three dyes. Care and commonsensc must be used.
Cheese is a splendid accompaniment to apple tart.
