A SNOWSTORM.
FALL IN CHRISTCHURCH. (Special to the “Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH. July 25. Bitterly cold wintry conditions were experienced in the city to-day. During the morning showers of hail, snow and sleet fell in the city and suburbs. A storm broke from the south-west late yesterday afternoon, and, shortly afterwards, rain commenced to fall. At times, the wind was of gale strength. Between 8 o’clock and midnight, although the wind did not decrease, the stars were to be seen at intervals and it appeared as though there would be a bossibility of a hard frost overnight. In the early morning, the wind increased in fury and rain and hail showers fell. As the morning advanced, showers of hail and rain fell at intervals. Towards mid-day the wind decreased and the sky lightened considerably. At Arthur’s Pass there has been a good fall of snow in the township, followed by a heavy frost. HEAVY FALL AT OTAKI. By Telegraph—Press Association OTAKI, July 25. There has been a heavy fall of snow on the ranges, which are covered to the , lowest point for years. A fall of snow was experienced in Dunedin during Thursday night, and yesterday the drifts were feet deep in places on the hills near the city. SOUTHERLY AT WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 25. j A sharp southerly storm came up at \ Wellington last evening, with lightning and hail. The snow on the hills is at a lower level than for many years. The crew of the steamer Tees, lying at Petone wharf, to discharge a cargo of timber, had to be called from the shore, and an anxious night was spent in fear that she might be driven ashore.
A young man. Nicholson, son of a farmer, was driving up Korokoro Hill when the horse was struck by lightning and killed.
The wind at Kelburn reached a maximum force of 53 miles per hour. At Rongotai, there were frequent gusts of over 60 miles. The weather is still unsettled, with squalls threatening.
