GENERAL NEWS.

A cable message from Sydney reports that a train passenger on the southern mall fell on the permanent way, near Mittagong, on Thursday night, and received abrasions. His name is stated to be Samuel H. Bridgeford, aged 42, and he is described as a Journalist from New Zealand. Politics were evidently a serious matter in 1870. In July of that year at a meeting held in Napier to consider the Government’s financial proposals was "the most disorderly ever held in Napier. Very few speakers obtained a hearing. Twice a ring was formed in the hall for the purpose of fighting, and the chairman vainly tried to restore order.” An elderly lady, who conducted her own case against a farmer at the Timaru Magistrate's Court yesterday, had some uncomplimentary remarks to make concerning the defendant. The items in plaintiff's claim were numerous, and most of them defendant disputed. Plaintiff several times exclaimed: “Your grabbing, your always grabbing.” To cap the issue, however, she exclaimed as defendant left the box: "Your as crooked as you look.” Defendant took the remark in good part. The beginning of Oamaru harbour is referred to in the "Herald” in July 1870, as follows:—"The Oamaru Dock—As soon as plans are passed by the Government, tenders will be called for in three sections. The first will consist of a wall 1000 feet in length, to be built of concrete, from low water mark in a S.E. direction, commencing near the brewery lagoon. The second section will include all the works connected with the dock entrance and basin: and the third a sea wall from the site of the old Jetty in a N.W. direction towards the other wall. There will be a distance of 1500 feet between the ends of the two walls. The depth of water at the dock entrance is to be Bft at low water.”
