INSURANCE FRAUDS.
FIVE ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 17, 9.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 17. In the police court, proceedings in connection with the insurance conspiracy charge, five defendants—Partridge, Paul, Roach, Cochrane and Smith—were committed for trial in August. Bail of £250 was allowed in each (A dramatic raid by detectives on the offices of the company last April, was followed by the arrest of the accused and the seizure of books and documents. During the investigation a great crowd of people gathered and made a hostile demonstration against some of the officials who appeared outside the building. An ugly situation appeared to be imminent when one of the investigating police escorted one of the insurance men to a car, in which he drove off amid angry shouts and jeers. Another official escaped by a rear entrance. A formidable pile of statements was tendered to the police by people who alleged that they had lost heavily by investments or policies in the company. The amount said to be involved in the charges against the three principals arrested is more than £500,000.)
