WHEAT DUTIES.
SLIDING SCALE SUPPORTED. The wheat duty question was considered in committee by the Council of the Timaru Chamber of Commerce last evening, when various phases of it were reviewed by several members. It was finally decided to send the following communication to the Prime Minister (Hon. G. W. Forbes):— “That this Chamber of Commerce views with alarm that part of the Unemployment Committee’s report recently published, proposing the elimination of duty on imported stock foods. Owing to ambiguity contained in a paragraph on page 16 of the report, it is thought that though wheat is not mentioned, this Chamber would like your declaration that it is not proposed to interfere in any way with protection granted to wheat growers under the present sliding scale of duty, which sliding scale, the Parliamentary Wheat Industries Committee set up last session recommended to Parliament its retention, and the findings of i this committee were adopted by Parliament.”
