TARANAKI AFFRONTED
PROFESSOR’S REMARKS CRITICISED. By Telegraph—Press Associat>on NEW PLYMOUTH, July 16. Strong exception to a statement of Professor Hunter, before the Minister of Education at Wellington, regarding claims by Taranaki for retention of revenue from the Opahu reserves for Taranaki educational purposes, was expressed by the Taranaki Education Board to-day» Professor Hunter’s statement that the attainments of Taranaki students were not as great as those of others, and that Taranaki students were seldom above fortieth position on the credit list, had been published throughout the Dominion. A Board member said it was a reflection on education in the province. It was mentioned that from one secondary school alone since 1912 thirty scholarships had been gained. Of these thirteen were in the first thirty on the credit list. One was top for New Zealand, and one was fourth for New Zealand.
