PUBLIC SERVICE.
ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON. July 14.
The annual conference of the Executive Council of the Public Service Association opened to-day, Mr Burgess presiding over a full attendance of delegates. In opening the proceedings. Sir A. T. Ngata mentioned the fear existing with regard to possible salary cuts, and said: “I think we are looking forward to cuts, instead of trying to arrange that more work should be done for the public expenditure.” The present system of non-political control under the present regime had. in his opinion, a splendid organisation to carry out the business of the country. The executive’s report was adopted. The conference passed a resolution of sympathy with Sir Joseph Ward's family, and also with the family of the late general tfeasurer, Mr Gilbert, one of the foundation members of the Association. Questions referred to by the chairman in moving the adoption of the report, were the restoration of the maxima of various salaries scales, on which a sympathetic hearing had been obtained from the late Sir Joseph Ward. superannuation, particularly the differentiation in the proportions paid in different grades of the service, despite the fact that all contributions were based on the same proportion of salaries, and contributions to the superannuation (fund by temporary officers, some of whom were required to pay a higher rate than might be regarded as equitable under the circumstances.
