SYDNEY STEAMER SERVICE.
CURTAILED TILL OCTOBER. MARAMA WITHDRAWN. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. July 11. Owing to the very heavy falling off in passenger traffic between New Zealand and Australia, the Union Steam Ship Company advise that it will be impracticable to continue the present service to and from Sydney during the winter months. The Marama will accordingly be withdrawn on her arrival at Wellington from Sydney on Tuesday morning, and until the end of October the service will be maintained by the Maunganui and UlimarOa. in conjunction with through trans-Pacific mail steamers. In order to commence her new running, the Maunganui will leave Auckland on Wednesday for Wellington. She is due here on Friday morning, and will leave again the same afternoon for Sydney, and on suosequent inward trips will proceed coastwise between Wellington and Auckland, to enable her to maintain regular outwards sailings. This new arrangement will mean that when the Vancouver and San Francisco mail steamer leaves Auckland or Wellington respectively for Sydney, then the Maunganui will sail that week from the other port. For instance, the Niagara will leave Auckland next Tuesday for Sydney, and the Maunganui will leave Wellington on the Friday of the same week for Sydney. When the Tahiti leaves Wellington on Tuesday, July 29, for Sydney, the Maunganui will leave Auckland on Friday, August 1. Thus, where before two steamers left Auckland or Wellington in one week for Sydney, there will now be only one. With regard to the inwards service, the arrangements will be the same. The Niagara will leave Sydney on her return trip on Thursday, July 24. arriving at Auckland on July 28. The Maunganui will leave Sydney on July 25 for Wellington, arriving here on July 28. The Tahiti will, however, leave Wellington on July 29 for Sydney, so that the Maunganui will leave here on July 30 for Auckland, leaving there on Friday, August 1, for Sydney. The Ulimaroa will maintain her usual running.
