HUNT CLUB

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt Club held yesterday there were present Messrs C. L. Orbell (chairman). A. S. Elworthy. R. Morris. M. Maze, R. Bassett, M. Harper and F. F. Neale. Mr J. A. Wooding made application to have indicator entered on the official calendar. The Inspector of Totalisators (Mr J. Bennett), advised that ’Mr E. C. J. Foot, of Timaru. would officiate as totalisator inspector at the Club’s forthcoming meeting.

A letter was received from the Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs forwarding a totalisator license for the fixture.

The chairman said that at a meeting of the Committee it had been decided that it be a recommendation to the meeting, that in view of the present conditions, the annual ball be not held this year.

On the motion of Mr Morris the recommendation was approved.

The Railway Department forwarded a schedule of trains to be run in connection with the Club’s steeplechase meeting on July 26,

Mr Orbell said that the Point-to-Point fixtures had been most successful, and thanks were due. to farmers for permitting their property to be used and also to donors of prizes both at Fairlie and Timaru.

The following officials were elected for the forthcoming meeting:—Judicial Committee, Messrs C. L. Orbell, F. F. Neale, H. H. Fisher, W. J. Bassett; dismount committee, W. J. Bassett, M. Maze, C. L. Orbell, R. Morris; pay-out stewards, A. S. Elworthy and C. L. Orbell.

Mr Orbell reported that Beaconsfield was not now available for hunting, there being a large area in crop, but Southburn was reported to be in good hunting order.

Mr Elworthy reported that Mr R. Burdon (Geraldine), had asked that a r meet be held there, as one was due to that district.

After discussion it was decided to hold a meet at Fitzgerald’s corner on Tuesday, July 22.

Mr Orbell said that at the annual Hunt Conference, which he had attended, there had been considerable agitation for the Conference to take over more control of Hunt race meet-

ings. This had met with strong opposi- ' tion from the South Island delegates, and it had been decided to inquire from the Racing Conference what power the ; Hunts Conference had in regard to j Hunt, race meetings. In his opinion. I the meetings should be run, as in the ( past, under the jurisdiction of the Racing Conference. It had been j decided that the minimum weight in ’ hunters’ races should be fixed at 10 | stone, and he thought that this was a J move in the right direction. A reso- j lu tion had also been passed asking ; delegates to support a minimum weight j for steeplechasers of 9 stone 7 lbs. j
