INDICTMENT OF MR THEODORE.

Report On Mining Leases. ONLY ONE WAY TO PROCEED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, July 10. Mr Theodore announces that he is taking no further part in the Federal Parliament until he clears his name. He will therefore remain away, pending the Queensland Government’s decision on the subject of its next move. The daily press in Sydney and Melbourne expresses the view that Mr Theodore was unwise in describing Mr Justice Campbell as a “political hireling,” and insists that the Queensland Government should take definite action along the lines suggested by him. The official Labour organ in Sydney says there is only one way: Mr Theodore must go into the witness box and give evidence on oath. Mr Theodore first entered Parliament in 1909, and while occupying a seat in the Queensland Legislature he reoresented the Chillagoe mining dist :.t. Within three years of his election his powers of speech, of debate, and of leadership brought him to the position of deputy-leader of his party, which was then in Opposition. When Labour came into office under the late Mr Ryan, Mr Theodore became the Premier’s chief Minister, and when Mr Ryan left State for Federal politics in 1919 Mr Theodore attained the Premiership. While occupying the leadership he visited England for the purpose of floating a loan, but finding the London market so unsympathetic, mainly as a result of English opposition to the Queensland Labour Party’s land policy, he transferred his application to Wall street, thus seeking the help of American finance. Mr Theodore then entered Federal politics, but there he was for some time content to remain a back bencher in the Labour Pa. /.

Later, however, he consented to assist in the framing of the policy of the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party, and joined the executive of the Party for that purpose. After the last elections, which resulted in a Labour victory, Mr Scullin appointed him Treasurer.

MR THEODORE’S HONOUR. EARLY TRIAL DEMANDED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 10, 8.40 p.m.) SYDNFY, July 10. Mr Theodore announces that he is going to Brisbane during the week-end to try to get the Government to act expeditiously in providing a trial before a judicial tribunal, to enable him to vindicate his honour.
